about me

I'm an 82-year-old retired chef from California. The golf clubs are gathering dust in the closet, the wife left me, the dog died.

I was a boomer cook for thirty-five years - working in country clubs, joints and camps from San Francisco to Alaska.

Back in the 70s I bluffed my way into a job as camp cook out in the bush a hundred miles from Nome. I had to learn fast how to bake sourdough bread and saute a dead moose, after taking its hair off.

I've always been a writer; started out writing fairy tales when I was ten.

Back in the 80s and 90s I stunned the literary world with raw talent as editor and columnist for the Territorial Dispatch in Placer County, Calif., Charlie McNiff, publisher.

I 'm pitching two e-novels: one is a sci-fi called Children of Space, the other a dramedy called Dogtown USA.

DOGTOWN USA

VINCENT G. JOHNSON

A wannabe stand-up comedian's act is so bad the theatergoers want him to get out of town and take his damn dog with him.

A WANNABE STAND-UP COMEDIAN CAN'T GET A LAUGH on Amateur Nights at Dogtown's local theatre because he doesn't know how to hold his mouth right.

Meanwhile, Dogtown is in the running to win the national contest as America's most beautiful small town. Dogtown's mayor sees the bumbling comedian and his outlaw dog as a fatal combination that could wreck the town's chances. Residents, too, want the failed comedian to get out of town and take his damn dog with him.

Then in a near death experience the comedian returns to 1925 in the storied small town of Nome. There in the midst of the diphtheria plague that threatens to wipe out the small Alaska town, he relives an incident in which he witnesses the desperate dash of Balto and his dog team bringing the serum to Nome.

And in that incident the comedian also has a chance to correct a terrible wrong that occurred in the Alaska gold fields so long ago.

Dogtown's cover was created by my good friend and excellent graphic artist Bradley Wind.

CHILDREN OF SPACE

VINCENT G. JOHNSON

Young sea voyagers sailing to the New World are captured by Space Beings to be trained as officers in the alien Red Fleet.

The three young seafarers, Rooney, Mop and Billy, and their physician/father have set out with high hopes on the long ocean journey to the New World. But soon their hopes for a new life in that faraway land seem lost.

Trapped below decks when a violent storm drives their doomed sailing vessel on the rocks, the three world travelers must prepare to end their trip and perhaps their lives at the bottom of the sea. Their father is already missing and feared lost overboard in the raging waters.

Captain Krank and his villainous crew abandon the three young passengers to their fate and take the only available lifeboat to save themselves.

To reach their goal over the ocean, the three world travelers first must face the Beastly Monster, and after that, they must outwit the alien Mardushians who are in orbit around Pluto, seeking young Earthlings to serve as recruits in the Red Fleet.

I got stopped cold with the anonymous 'they' in 'they teach new man all they know.' I had to keep rereading the SUMMARY to discover who 'they' were. As a tech writer you should not puzzle me with a pronoun like that. Naughty, naughty. In the 'Forward' section did you mean to say 'Foreword'? ... view book
