about me

I'm Marjorie F. Baldwin but you can call me "Friday"

Yeah, just like the gal pictured in the avatar + yes, that was an amazing book by Heinlein. If you haven't already read it, you should. It's got so many thought-provoking questions (and a few answers) about the rights to identity and self. What really makes a person a PERSON? In fact, Heinlein's Artificial People concept in "Friday" was one of several inspirations for my first release, CONDITIONED RESPONSE.

You can check out my book on Smashwords:

It'll be on sale starting Friday, April 20, 2012 and will also be available in the Kindle UK (and other Kindle Stores) as well as Apple iBookstore and Barnes & Noble's Nookstore. Oh and the Kobo (open ePub) bookstore. Yay Smashwords for being such a great distributor!

I'm American, btw, and have lived all over the USA as well as in Israel for four years.I write Science Fiction under this name and Romantic Suspense under another name. To learn more about me, visit my About.Me page (link below).

I'm not ranked--ON PURPOSE. I'm NOT going to give up that nice horizontal line of NOT YET RANKED. I'm also not going to read much here. This profile has been created and maintained as a place where I can communicate with my readers and meet other Authors who read and write SciFi. I'm here for the community, not the rankings ^_^

In case you don't understand what that means:

NO SHELVES, NO WAY, NO HOW

I choose to read action, adventure, crime and mystery but don't like erotica (do like romance but not just porno words *ick* I need a shower just thinkign about it) REALLY don't like thriller or horror AT ALL and LOATHE fantasy genre. As in, dragons and knights and elves and mages and all of the elements that make High Fantasy successful are what make my skin crawl. Worse, is the "paranormal" stuff: werewolves, vampires, other creatures of the night. NO thank YOU.

I like stories that have simple words (not prosaic literature) and plots that are more about the characters than the events or setting. I've rarely read literary fiction because it's usually too dry, too wordy and too boring for me. Ironic, since the few I've read have claimed to be "character studies" and the characters were so flat, I did indeed feel like I was studying. I want to be entertained when I read. I want to not even notice the hours flying by.

If your book is one of these, great, it's possible I'll have a miraculous day off once every 6 months and can try to read and give you feedback (but NO SHELVES). If all you want is comments -- honest comments, not necessarily praise -- ask me to read your book. If you wanted something else (like a shelf) you're outta luck here.

If your book is any kind of fantasy, horror, splatterpunk or has werewolves/vampires or other creatures of the night, alternate dimensions, winged creatures that spit fire (or acid) or don't taste like chicken ...sorry NO read NO shelf. NO, okay? No.

Doesn't everything taste like chicken these days? :)

Conditioned Response

Shayla didn't ask to be a Councillor. As a Phoenician, she shouldn't have to live among the humans, let alone take part in their world. But the Seven Chiefs ordered her to go with Raif, a Proctor from the world Outside. They said they had a Plan. Well, the Seven Chiefs always had a Plan, and Shayla had plans of her own after suffering 13 years as a member of the humans' World Council.

Raif had never intended for things to go this far. A few months, maybe a year, and he could send the little Phoenician girl home again, back where she belonged. She's not a little girl anymore and now he finds himself in competition with his own progenitor for control over his Heir--and future. It's not a Councillor's job to protect a Proctor but that's just what Raif needs right now. Can Shayla save him before he loses his mind completely?

November, 2011 - I've deleted the opening chapters since the final edits are altering their content substantially (in a good way!) As a result the book has (a) become private and (b) lost all shelves and watch lists. If you had previously placed the book on a shelf or watch list, my apologies but... view book

Joshua, thanks for finding time to get back here. I know your time's in high demand! I suspect you only got as far as the first section where (personally) I think it's still dragging on interminably. It's all good stuff but it could DEFINITELY be faster-paced. Dialog, scenes, everything. I don't ... view book

Hey Rik, Thanks for taking a look AND giving me a critique. I appreciate the flattery but even more so, I really appreciate the feedback on the two points you made--the sense you're jumping into the middle of the story and the opening in the Council Session not grabbing you. I've been ponderin... view book

Thanks, Pokemaster for the comments on "5: the mad scientist." Jorle was one of the first characters I made up back in the 1980s--but I'm not sure how to take it that you half-doubt I wrote this *LOL* The idea that Shayla could/would kill anyone has to always be an undercurrent in this story. Thanks, Raymond, for the feedback. Part of me feels more about the Phoenician world would be "good" but the overall series has a meta-arc and in THIS book, we're mostly focused on the World Council (with the Phoenicians and the Community both falling slightly into the background) I'm fairly sure... view book
