about me

I am middle aged (if life expectancy is around sixty... according to my wife I am lucky to have lived this long) and several quarters through a mid-life crisis. Having left a job in finance, I work in an inner city school. This involves predominantly playing football, brainwashing small children into singing songs about me, and forcing them to read me stories. It is a tough job, but there are intrinsic rewards.
I enjoy martial arts and have been beaten up by Russians, Iranians, Tunisians, Syrians, and a Scottish lady. The last was nothing to do with kung fu, and money was involved. I see myslf less as an easer of international relations, and more of a ninja-ish shadow. A velvet blur instead of a man. My doctor is hopeful the concussion will clear.
I would be greatly appreciative of any review of my writing, and look forward to the abuse that will be involved. As you can tell from the Scottish Incident I normally pay for this and hope that Authonomy will reduce my phonebill.

Broad-Casting Spiders

Toby Stone

George, a psychic arachnid, despairs at the murder of fellow spiders and takes over a local television station to stop the anti-spider violence.

George is a psychic spider who can control what humans think and do. He lives with two house-variety spiders and the Milligans. After watching Mrs Milligan batter to death and drown his Uncle Bob, George falls into despair. He decides he cannot let the spider killing go on. Taking control of Mr Milligan, he commandeers a television station in the centre of Manchester. He aims to broadcast spider propaganda to make humans see that spiders can feel too. His plans go amiss when humans become suspicious, wondering if, after all, spiders can think, and an arachnid genocide begins.

Hello. A clairty of expression helps to transmit the depth of historical and cultural knowledge which underpin this text. The crisp, robust style also helps to carry the reader's eye deeper into the life of the main protagonist. There is a tendency to directly reveal details about the setting a... view book

Hello Ms Lyman, There is a sophisticated tissue of observational detail in this extract, which feeds into the characters and their emotions, then back into the setting. From the seasonal flora, to the confections of airports, books, location, everything is in its proper place to support and define... view book

Hello Mr H, There is a pleasing balance of surreality and tension in the premise of this story. I can see that you have foreshadowed the critical moments of conflict in a prologue-like first scene, and I can see why you have done this. I feel that the next scene, between the two friends, drifts s... view book

Hello Abi, Your writing is varied and efficiently constructs the scenes of your narrative. You do a very good job in exploring the senses in transmitting information about her surroundings, manuevering the reader's viewpoint expertly between touch and sight and smell. The idea and setting are cla... view book

Hello Richard, I really like the way you have written this. I aim to try and give some constructive feedback amongst the positive, but it took me longer with your extract to find things that I could talk about, in this way. Your first chapter moves forward at a good pace, and therefore suits the... view book
