about me

Marion Bernard lives on the far western edge of Canada. She has a couple of degrees that have nothing whatsoever to do with creative writing, but has bookshelves and boxes full of science fiction and fantasy novels, a solid collection of the classics and even the odd bestseller. Juggling a regular day job, multiple writing projects and a family leaves little time for other passions. However, she does manage to squeeze in time to dance regularly, ski occasionally and laugh as often as possible.

Marion Bernard's short stories have been published in science fiction, fantasy and horror magazines. Distant Kin is her first mainstream science fiction novel.

Distant Kin

Marion Bernard

A small, distant colony struggles to protect their world and way of life – and ends up changing the very nature of the game.

Newham is reunited with Earth after more than three centuries and the small human colony is tossed into a complex political game which touches the far corners of the galaxy. Struggling to preserve their planet and way of life, the colonists face off against their perceived enemy. But even while that battle is being fought, other players are changing the very nature of the game. Captain Charles Jonson, head of the mission from Earth, takes on the acting role of his life. Simply surviving on the planet is difficult enough, but manipulating and deceiving the beautiful woman who leads the colony, Councilor Nydra, is by far the greatest challenge he has ever faced. While Charles and Nydra spar with misleading words and hidden weapons, a young woman in a distant settlement defies the iron-clad rules laid down for the colony’s survival and leaves the safety of her home to join the boys in their rite-of-passage, the First Journey. Searching for a place where she can belong, Daniela becomes the unexpected key to the planet’s future.

This is not my usual sort of story but the first chapter definitely grabbed my attention. I can't say I'm enjoying it (just finished chapter 4 and my skin is prickling!) but I do admire the writing. This work shows real skill in setting a mood, with deft descriptions of people and surroundings tha... view book

My suggestion is to study punctuation rules a bit more. First off, there is always some form of punctuation before ending a quote, most often a comma (e.g. "Now then," said the mage...") Your sentences would also benefit from the correct use of commas to break out subordinate clauses. Yeah, I know... view book
