about me

Eight stories to read & comment on.

My mother is visiting from the US, so any reading I do will be sporadic until she goes back to her own country!

Member of the Brutally Honest Critique Group.

I am honest when I comment. It isn't personal. I don't know you, and all I know is how I feel about your writing when I read it. I write comments to help others try to improve their writing.

If I find a section boring, I will be blunt and say I found this section boring. If I don't find the characters likable or sympathetic, I will say so. If I think the writing style could use improvement, I will say so.

I don't spend so much time reading and commenting to make up stuff about someone's work. The point of this is to improve our writing so that we have a chance in the publishing world and get a book (or many..) sold, not to fluff egos in a false fashion.

I hope you do not view this as rude, but I don't like lying to people or saying things I don't believe just to try to garner interest in my book.

I want constructive comments. If something I wrote bores you, feel free to say so, just mention why you found it boring, or why you didn't like the characters, or why you didn't like the writing style. This only helps me grow and learn as a writer.

I do not do backing trades, but I will read the work of anyone who backs me as a way of thanks for your support.

I enjoy reading and writing fantasy of most types. Please do not ask me to read general literature unless you read & comment on my fantasy novel first. This type of writing normally does not interest me, but I honor read & comment exchanges.

This is my personal method of operation when I write and receive critiques:

Don't attach your self worth to what people say about your writing.

Your writing isn't you.

The Eye of God

RJ Blain

Raised as a combat slave from birth, all Terin wanted when he stepped into the Arena was death.

Denied his wish, Terin is thrust into the middle of the search for the Eye of God, the missing part of the Triad of God.

The one who possessed the Eye could do anything. Entire Empires were born from its influence only to fall at its loss. Men betrayed one another and killed for it.

Caught up in machinations far beyond his ability to comprehend, it falls to Terin to prevent the reuniting of the Triad. Should the three relics of God meet, no power controlled by mortal man will be able to spare the world from its destruction.

The Eye of God is a traditional fantasy novel.

I've read the first three chapters of this, and I have to say, this is a doozy. It's a good read, and a really accurate presentation of what it was like going to school. These situations are all totally plausible, which gives it a hard edge. It toes some lines I'm not normally comfortable with, but ... view book

This is a BHCG review. I'm going to first put a disclaimer up before I start giving you my thoughts: This is pretty far outside of the genres I normally read, but I'm going to give a shot at this anyway. I've read through the first 2 chunks of text. You have a pretty compelling start, but it f... view book

Greetings! I've read through all four chapters. I have mixed feelings about this. I really like Shane's character; he is simple enough to understand, has enough variances to make him fairly unique while also playing on stereotypes to help develop him (this is a good thing, in my opinion.) His par... view book

Greetings!! Sorry it took so long to get to review your work. Things have been quite hectic on my side of the mountain! I have read to the end of chapter 6. In some ways, this book isn't the style I normally like to read, but you write very evocatively, which is great for horror. The thing tha... view book

Greetings! First, thanks again for reading Eye of God, very appreciated. Sorry this took so long to get to, things have been rather hectic lately. This is really outside of my usually reading material, but I'll give it my best shot. If something is out of place in my comments, it is probably d... view book
