about me

The characters in my books were born of my passion for the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

I am not entirely sure where the passion came from. I am an engineer by profession. I think it was perhaps my struggles with the British Constitution during my studies for a law degree that rekindled my interest in history. I cannot say why I homed in on the high middle ages.

Perhaps it was because I found it so different from the violent time some say it was.

It was a time of great characters, great philosophers, great buildings and great exploits. It was a time too of great disasters, flood and famine and, of course, the Black Death.

But there were the people too, many of them not so different from us. They had somewhat different beliefs, of course, but they were real people with real lives. They were not the grey folk of history books. They lived their lives. They laughed and they cried. I hope something of those folk lives again in the pages of my books.

I started out with the intention of writing one book. That book was Albion Unbounded. Halfway through that I knew the plot of Albion Afflicted. Then there was Albion Regained. So the tale goes on.

I did not start out with the intention of sharing my books with others but, once they were done, why not. And if one really wants to suffer trials and tribulations, one needs only to go out there and try hunting for an agent or publisher!

The fruits of my efforts are at:
ISBN 978-1-84923-159-6 and
ISBN 978-1-906558-99-4

Anything about the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries - provided it is not perpetuating the myth that the middle ages were backward and always violent.

I do not usually have too much sympathy with a whingeing Saxon. They fought. They came second. They rebelled in the north. They came second again. And it was not so much earlier that they were the aggressors. And it all settled down not too much later. But I found myself being hooked by the... view book
