about me

[NOTE: The last Authonomy chapter is the conclusion of the book. Two incomplete chapters are buffers against going under the 10K limit while updating.] PROFILE: My three children have three spouses who are as fine as my offspring. Seven wonderful grandchildren fill out my family picture. I stay (American southerners know what that means) in South Carolina, but my compass points toward Virginia. As a Christian pastor--now retired--I've written public documents for thirty five years--sermons, articles, etc.. I believe a current writing project about the late Christopher Hitchens--an atheist--explores God's mercy at the time of our passing away. Until I do some more editing on my project, I'm most interested in star-ratings. I like critiques.

Christopher Hitchens At Heaven....

James Workman

What if God has surprises for each of us at our death?

You may say, “I don’t believe in God.” But, what if . . . ?

Or your belief in God may not give you comfort about facing God at death.

Perhaps you are strong in your own faith, but are concerned about the destiny of someone you care about.

I have been with a number of people at their deaths and have seen a definite interval of "passing away." In this book I explore God's mercy through an imaginary conversation between Jesus and a famous atheist in the moments of his passing.

Christopher Hitchens was the leading advocate for aggressive atheism until his death in December 2011. At no point do I lure him into heaven. I've posted the last chapter on this site to reassure skeptics about where I'm going with this.

This book is an exploration of God’s surprises. I seek a path between pronouncements of fundamentalist Christians and uncritical universalism--"all will be reconciled to God in the end" (Hitchens despised both!). I'm also hoping to appeal to readers who are negative on "organized religion" but who might welcome a different angle on God and God's hope of reconciliation.

Egon--(this can count for CCR). I re-read the edited chapter 1 and like it fine. But then, I liked the original. I'm a story-guy unless something really stops me in my tracks. Best, Jim view book

Lela--(for CCR)--I've read through 4 and continue to be mesmerized. I have only one suggestion--and so minor. You write "secondary road." Secondary sounds to me like a Rand-McNalley map legend. "Second" is from Latin for "after first"--used in English from around 1300 (sorry--I'm an etymology freak)... view book

Audrey--(for CLF)--I'm re-reading from the beginning. The edit at the end of chapter 1 is very good. It is more subtle and neutral. view book

Joyce--I read 10 and 11 for the first time (skipped some of the middle in the schedule crunch before). Very good writing to fill in Onesimus's journey. I want this to be published. Question--Do you really want Philomena to be only 3' tall? This made me stop reading and look up dwarfism on the int... view book
