about me

I'm getting the hang of the new system now. It hasn't really changed the way I operate as I always read and comment, rather than do drive-by backings. Rest assured that if I say I am backing, I will back your book although you might have to wait a day or so for the backing to show up, as I wait for a space to clear up on my shelf. And if I back you, I will back you for at least 24 hours - you don't need to check if I have. The more I like your book, the longer it will stay on my shelf, which is I suppose the point.

I'm not really getting the star rating system. I would have thought, since it's anonymous, everyone would take the opportunity to show what they really think. But in fact every single book, even some which are barely grammatical, are rated at least 4 star.

As for my book, I'd love any constructive feedback and am happy to reciprocate. If anyone wants to do a swap-read, please drop me a line.

About me: degree in Eng Litt from Oxford, work in the City.

Gallows-fodder, they called him. Hex means to prove them all wrong. He just needs to stay alive long enough to do it.

Imagine a world in which the Roman empire has survived into the Edwardian era. Ruled by the self-styled Chosen elite, the empire is fabulously wealthy, but decadent and corrupt, threatened from within and without by the native magic-wielding Wilder tribes.

Hex is an orphan, living in the household of the mighty Degaletera family. When the heir is murdered, suspicion falls on him and he flees, hoping to clear his name and solve the mystery of his mother's long ago disappearance. His journey takes him across the length and breadth of the Inner Bounds. He meets with treachery, but also with unexpected friendship, and is even granted a tantalising glimpse of the path to another universe. But when the law finally catches up with him and he is cast into the bowels of the dreaded Interrogatory gaol, it seems that his luck has run out at last...

Hi Dan Great pitch - that's a situation that anyone would read about. You get into the minds of your characters very well and give each of them a fascinating back story that draws the reader in. Fast, contemporary and filled with authentic detail. Backed. Nicole Chosen view book

Hi Donna This is a really fun read. You are obviously a chick lit aficionado and your work bears all the hallmarks of a great example of the genre. I love that your heroine is a full-on bitch instead of being the usual insipid nice girl and I can't wait to see what poor S.Hite grew up into. Backe... view book

Hi David This is a nice simple story, told well, that will certainly appeal to its audience. It's unpretentious and really sees the world through a child's eyes. Backed (you'll see it in couple of days) Nicole Chosen view book

Hi Jonathan A professional piece of work. The pace feels a bit leisurely and I would have liked more on Sam's feelings when she finds out about the betrayal - also I can't work out why she's so pissed off at Ben, he didn't do anything wrong - but overall very enjoyable. Can't wait to find out wha... view book

Hi Mike The best kind of fantasy - you bring the reader right into your world straight away and your characters are alive and sympathetic. Clean straightforward prose which doesn't interfere with the narrative, overall a very decent piece of work. Backed (you'll see it in a couple of days). Ni... view book
