about me

Hi, a little bit about me. I received my B.A. in Fine Arts and English from Indiana Universty in '71 and earned my M.A.E. in '89. I teach elementary art and paint and draw on the side. I think of myself as mainly an artist and poet. I've just recently renewed my interest in fiction after a long hiatus.

Hot Coffee in Clean Cups

Harold Schaefer

Ten stories collected: Hot coffee in clean cups, a napkin and a Madeleine, a smile and a companion, a story to choose.

Hot coffee in Clean Cups, each brew different, each story enticing, in its richness and full-bodied flavor.
Partake of a ghost story or two. But they are not set in some fog-bound, dreary mansion, one takes place in a sunny resort town in Michigan, the other on the grounds of the Woodstock Museum in Bethel New York.
If general fiction is your metiere, there are a number of stories, from, 'Belcher Wilcox', where Jase from my other book,'Tales of Brave Ulysses', has a cameo, to a young boy not quite understanding adult games, to three old men confronting memories and loss and one of life's hard truths. Or maybe you prefer two young cow hands in the modern West trying to decipher women,'Fate and Thom'.
Flights of fancy, fantasy? Of course! If you've ever been ignored in a restaurant or business, treated like you aren't even there, the answer awaits you in, 'The Invisibles'.
Do you prefer the darker brews, those with unsettling aromas? Then per chance you might like to partake of, 'The Gargoyle Grate', where a curio purchased at an antique store is something much deadlier.
Here, step in side and let me pour you a cup.

TALES OF BRAVE ULYSSES

Harold Schaefer

Eight friends-one tumultuous trip; a generation in flux, coming together-breaking apart on a quiet college campus in the spring of 1968.

The time is 1968, a warm spring night on a mid-western college campus. Jason and seven of his friends gather in a dorm room to pass a joint, share some wine, and groove to the music. An offhand remark by one of them, a joke, begins an eventful journey that will leave each of them forever changed . Alliances will form and allegiances will shift. These students will find themselves thrust into the very heart of this tumultuous time where sudden violence, shattered dreams, and even death may await.
Tales of Brave Ulysses is Jason’s story. Haunted by a tragic accident, he is left emotionally damaged trying to come to grips with both his past and his future. His is a journey towards love, an encompassing, sexual, healing, love that awaits him, but first he must endure trials and loss of faith before he finds his true way.

This is certainly a well-crafted piece of fiction. Your word choice is flowing and elegant. I would however, like more of a feel early on of Amanda's character. What sort of a girl is she? A bit more dialogue in chapter two would break up the descriptive passages and I believe would read better and ... view book

Your prologue is a great kick start to your novel. It's a pretty riveting account. I do have a question however. In the earlier crime that Derek remembers about a gun shot going through the 'corpus callusom' of the victim's brain, how does he know this? This seems very detailed for a newspaper acco... view book

Good beginning. I like the exotic locale. Your dialog rings true (at least to this reader) to the region of the world you're describing. This sounds like a very topical and involving read. Backed. H. Schaefer 'Tales of Brave Ulysses' view book

This is some dynamic writing. Your descriptive passages are quite lyrical and poetic. Your dialog is sticato and cutting. This reads quite well. Your story sounds like it has a very interesting premise. Backed. H. Schaefer 'Tales of Brave Ulysses' view book
