about me

Worked in education, theatre, radio. One published crime novel. Looking for fair and helpful criticism.

What I'd really like is a simple response. Do you think the first chapter works: yes or no?

I’m happy to do swap reads. I worked for a while in YA fiction so know a bit about the market there. I’ve read a lot of the 'Classics', lots of Historical novels, some SF and fantasy (Peake and stuff) over the years. I'm interested in almost anything that's well written or tells a good story well.

I have a preference for ‘Literary Fiction’ – and by that I mean writing that shows an understanding of literary tradition.

I’m happy to give critiques that are detailed but, if you prefer, I’ll email you my response.

I’m aware that there’s probably a gap between my intentions and my finished piece – the book may well not be doing what I think it's doing - so any feedback you might have, would be gratefully received.

I've taken down the last 4 chapters of the novel. If anyone wishes to read the ending plaese email me.

Complete Novel: 95,000 words

Absalom Said

G E Fordson

Suspicions are thick on the ground but suspects are few. After the first attack it's only a matter of time before a woman dies.

The Village College is an ordinary school with ordinary pupils, ordinary teachers and ordinary problems. That is until the attacks start. No one takes it seriously when it's just that 'sodding tart' Kerry Clarkson who gets hurt but then nice girls start getting harmed and the Village College has no choice; it has to call in the local police. ‘Absalom Said’ takes an unsentimental look at adolescence in the Nineties, drawing back the curtain to reveal strained relationships behind the scenes at a school in turmoil. Warning: 'Absalom Said' contains strong language and some readers may find some of the material shocking.

Nothing You Can Do

G E Fordson

Sometimes a death in the family is like a plane crash – no one walks away from the wreckage.

Sam Dickens, an ordinary, middle-aged kitchen designer, makes Helen James, a Cambridge therapist, a simple offer – I’ll pay you twelve thousand pounds if you can fix me.

It’s an offer any therapist should refuse but no one is more surprised than Helen James when she accepts. She needs the money. Her career is in crisis. Maybe, just maybe, if she saves Sam she can save herself.

In a series of therapy sessions Helen tries to hold onto her professional life, tries to find a way to honour her part of the bargain.
In a collection of personal memoirs Sam Dickens reveals some of the truth behind his grief.

It soon becomes clear that only something extreme will pull him out of his emotional tailspin, only a shock will make him admit what’s really at the heart of his despair.

There’s nothing you can do about some kinds of cancer. There’s nothing you can do about death. And, sometimes, there’s nothing you can do about the terrible, unforgivable mistakes we sometimes make.

LF40 Dianna, Prelude. I’m going to try and respond to this as a reader as opposed to agnostic. Which means my first feelings as the book opens is that this is very familiar territory. I know this story. I’ve read it a hundred times. It doesn’t feel different. Agents generally hate stories tha... view book

Amie, Great, tough start to your novel - although, as it's a Prologue, why not set it in the present and let the reader really live the experience?. At the moment we know that Sophie survives the attack. If it's more immediate we'd be wondering if she's going to come through the horror. Reading on... view book

Eileen, This is a great idea and contains many intelligent observations, witty asides and unusual experiences. However, at the moment, it feels like a very early draft and the reader is left wondering what kind of genre they’re dealing with. Here are some observations on the first chapter. It... view book

Caro, As Pete said earlier, there must be an audience for this story. I like the way you keep things simple and concentrate upon the tensions in the family thrown up by Hannah’s illness. Your characters are believable and react in credible ways. As you have chosen to use a third person point of vie... view book

Andrea, Just started to read this. It's certainly a cut above a lot of the writing in this site. Well done. I'm really looking forward to the read. view book
