about me

I have worked as a journalist and writer for over 30 years and I have been involved with a great many national and international stories involving crime, sport, showbiz and special features. Formerly, I played professional football for several years and later joined the BBC and presented both radio and TV programmes. I have been involved as an investigative journalist on many miscarriage of justice and human rights cases and have helped to quash the convictions of several high profile prisoners - jailed for crimes they did not commit.

favourite books

TOWN WITHOUT PITY - which was later adapted as a BBC TV two-part drama starring Stephen Tompkinson in my role, and a real start support cast including Caroline Katz. This is now available as a download on Amazon Kindle. THE FINAL DIVE - the investigation into what really happened to the navy spy diver 'Buster' Crabb (inspiration for Ian Fleming's James Bond) who disappeared in mysterious circumstances in Portsmouth Harbour in 1956 whilst examining some visiting Russian warships; and MALLARD - How the Blue Streak Broke the World Speed Record. This book was also used as the basis for a new TV documentary on the Discovery Channel for National Geographic to be broadcast worldwide during the summer of 2011. A final book worthy of mention is MANCHESTER THIEFTAKERS - about my great grandfather's work as detective superintendent in Manchester during the Victorian & Edwardian era. He was also the first Royal Detective - armed to protect the Prince of Wales. All of these books are available on Amazon with some also available for instant download via Amazon Kindle.

Victorian Crimebeaters - the b....

Don Hale

A Victorian detective's personal account of policing, from night watchmen of the 1820s, to problems of life on the beat, CID, and royal protection duties.

This is a unique account of the early days of policing in England from the night watchmen of the 1820s to the introduction and development of the detective force up and until 1910. It contains a particularly unusual report of life on the beat and how officers dealt with a variety of crimes. The information is all taken directly from police officers' notebooks, newspaper cuttings from that Victorian period of change, and includes watchmen reports, newspaper cuttings, and verification by the central Museum and Greater Manchester Police Museum. Much of the contents have been developed from the personal notes of one of Manchester's top detectives Supt James Wood, a former soldier and royal protection officer who served Queen, King and country until 1910. * Much of this early copy is the fascinating, raw unedited version with references for university students. It is an ideal study for law and media students. Includes references to Sherlock Holmes and foreign agitators.

In Denial of Murder

Don Hale

A journalist's quest for the truth puts his life in danger and stirs some hidden and unexpected secrets about a woman's murder 30 years ago.

A journalist suddenly finds his life threatened, when he begins to uncover fresh evidence suggesting that a teenager arrested, convicted and jailed for the cold blooded, and brutal murder of an attractive, well known, local woman more than 30 years before, may in fact be innocent of the crime. He believes the prisoner - who is still locked away indefinitely and completely forgotten about within the British justice system - may have just been a convenient victim of a town's conspiracy, and a determination to suppress the murdered woman's potentially guilty secrets? Tagged by the national press as the 'Bakewell Tart' murder, and facing several attempts on his life, the journalist remains undeterred in his quest for the truth, and unintentionally stirs mixed and heated emotions within a small community, still seemingly intent on burying one of the town's most controversial events. This is a most entertaining, highly unusual, thought provoking, fast-paced, roller coaster thriller ride of a dramatic story - which is bound to keep you turning pages to wonder just what will happen next!

The Wrong Body

Don Hale

A fast paced race against time to right a wrong, solve a series of murders, and unravel a fascinating international political plot.

An important foreign delegate is unexpectedly pushed under a subway train in New York just after posting some secret papers to his daughter in London. This incident sparks a 'bloody' chase across the UK to find her and/or the package, puts her life in danger and attracts unwelcome attention from underworld international assassins. Amidst all this chaos a journalist suddenly and unexpectedly becomes entwined in the plot when his friend is seriously injured in a drugs hijack and a local businessman is framed for a murder he didn't commit. The intriguing saga becomes a fascinating plot within a plot engaging the Intelligence services from several countries and leads to an exciting and totally unexpected climax.
