about me

A Scottish Ferry Tale was published via CreateSpace in 2009, in paperback and Kindle editions (on Amazon). It's also available in other eBook formats at Smashwords. I'm at work on another, related book.

Thanks to those who have taken a look at Ferry Tale, and I am happy to read anyone's work... please be patient though!

What gives me satisfaction: meeting a deadline, vegetable gardens, watching someone succeed when they weren't sure they could, learning new things

What I can't get a handle on: silly rules, office politics, keeping up with the Joneses, pedicures

What I am: writer, biologist, dreamer, chocolate lover, mom, wife, friend, runner, editor, kayaker, occasionally funny, often distracted

favourite books

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

Moby Dick - Herman Melville

I'm A Stranger Here Myself - Bill Bryson

Plan B (further thoughts on faith) - Anne Lamott

The Likeness - Tana French

Mating - Norman Rush

A Scottish Ferry Tale

Nancy Volkers

Scotland. Heartbreak. Chocolate cake. Love at first sight.

Cassie Wrentham gets dumped within 24 hours of arriving in Scotland. Rather than throw her ex out a window or do something equally drastic, she chooses an island off the Scottish coast and spends the rest of her vacation with frightening-looking cows, difficult cats, and wonderful, friendly, stubborn Scots. One of them attracts her immediately... and the feeling is mutual. But Cassie is ruled by her head, not her heart; she can't even read a fairy tale without rolling her eyes and picking the plot apart. There's no way she's going to fall for the love-at-first-sight thing, even on a windswept, romantic Scottish isle.

Or is there?

It is published... through CreateSpace (self-publishing) on Amazon. Not quite the same as being picked up by a major publisher but it works for me right now. ;-) The ebook also is available on Amazon, Smashwords, and should be on B&N and in the iTunes store soon. view book

GK, I read 2 chapters of this and it's chock-full of vibrant writing. Great story. I do feel it's somewhat disorganized... seems to jump around in time a bit, or "start over" in certain spots. And while i know it's a memoir, there is a lot of "telling" rather than "showing," which slows the pace... view book

This is an astounding first chapter - really pulls me in! I've read through chapter 4 and am backing on the strength of the writing (which is excellent) and the plot (also excellent). I admit the part about Johnny not bothering to use the bathroom threw me off a bit, though... most games have "pause... view book

Rebecca - this is some great writing. Elaborate character development and detailed descriptions. I did find the book to start a bit slow, and got lost in a few of the early sentences (long and kind of comma heavy). I like that you painted a picture of the house while Anna is alone in it, but I also ... view book

Eric, I really enjoy your writing and your narrative voice. I'm completely drawn into the story. I would also suggest maybe reworking the pitch to not give away all of the plot... you could hint at the potential disaster while not stating it outright. These characters are finely drawn and I'm cu... view book
