about me

My background in creative writing is mainly as a dramatist for theatre and radio, though I'm also a trained journalist and have worked in that field for print and radio. I won the Scottish Screen First Draft Award for my screenplay, Disciple back in 1999.
I'm a Glaswegian, from an Indian (Sikh) background.

Here are some reviews of my stage and radio work -
CITIZEN SINGH
"Billy Connolly spiced with curry" - The Scotsman

SIEGE MENTALITY
"Mattu may well prove to be the voice of his generation" - The Scotsman
"His unfailing sense of humour sends up everything and everybody, including himself ... an inspired script by the talented Gurmeet Mattu" - Glasgow Herald

COWBOYS & INDIANS
"The script itself is youthful, fantastical, verbally over-exuberant ... Mattu has created a quartet of thoroughly workable and believable characters ... the weird, exuberant, density of his language demonstrates beyond doubt that he has absorbed the unique rhythms and atmosphere of the city" -The Guardian

"This cheerfully fanciful tale of business derring-do and star-crossed romance brings together a thoughtful span of issues that relate to establishing one's own identity. Mattu's serious, sincere message would seem to be that the most important element in deciding who you are is to declare yourself a human being among other human beings"- Glasgow Herald

"Mattu approaches his subject with wit and sympathy. An intelligent, lively and funny play" - The List

A MsSIAH
"There is good writing here" - Glasgow Herald

"Mr Mattu certainly does not shirk big issues"- The Scotsman

SICK AS A PARROT
"What made this engaging small play was playwright Gurmeet Mattu's accurate ear for Glasgow speech and the neatly turned way in which he used the waywardness of adolescent devotion" - The Guardian

THE STORMER
(from Long Story Short)
"Gurmeet Mattu provided the most rewarding theatrical experience - an off-beat romantic comedy, full of incident, colour and suspense" - Sunday Times

"Of particular note was the sketch by Gurmeet Mattu" - Edinburgh Evening News

"The richest vein of comedy was mined in 'The Stormer' by Gurmeet Mattu" - The Scotsman

The Hitler Letters

Gurmeet Mattu

Hitler, in his own words, as he writes to various people while a starving artist in Vienna at the beginning of the century.

Are these letters genuine? We leave that to the reader to decide. Let us just say that their validity has not been questioned by historians. These are not the letters of the Fuhrer Hitler of the Third Reich, rather they are the letters of the starving artist Hitler in Vienna in the early years of the 20th century. As such they deal with mundane matters such as his struggle for survival rather than world shaking events. However, because they deal with his growth into maturity they show the development of his racial and political theories and as they also show his path to adulthood the content may be unsuitable for delicate readers. In any case they reveal the early days of the man who set out to conquer the world.

The usual inspired quality insanity from Pat. Backed of course. view book

The writing here undoubtedly has style but as this type of fantsy isn't really my cup of tea I find it hard to be critical. It flows smoothly enough and the description is captivating, if sometimes overwritten, but perhaps this is a necessity of the genre. I'm just not qualified to say. I'm sure ... view book

Nice, smooth, undemanding writing and the promise of an intriguing story to come. What more could one want? Backed. view book

The premise, as is only fitting for a thriller, is promising and shows an awareness of the modern world's politics and technology. The writing itself is strong and vigorous. The situation and settings are well described and the characters and dialogue are convincing. This is good writing in a ge... view book
