about me

Have decided nothing is relevant on this site except books and book related, so to make matters easier for you and me the following applies ( and exceptions are a matter of judgement...but will exceed any kind of proscription)

I will read what attracts intrinsically; I will back what I believe will stimulate the thoughts and pleasures of others (with or without further work) but I do not trade integrity, or expect others to. I remain here to make genuine friends, and to find diversions, literary and emotional. For me the race undermines everything worthwhile.

What would the book I’d want to read have in it? Some or all of:-

Interesting characters, well drawn so that unique views/ even outlandish would seem integral to circumstances or relationships. The characters would create the story, not merely serve as vehicles for plot. I do like to care about somebody, even if only to hope they meet the sticky end they deserve!

A suggestion of Philosophy. It could be an underlying sense that the author chose to write this rather than another book for a reason. The reason may be undefined.

A Story that grows and could change in any one of a number of directions. I want to take the ride, not get to the end. (If it works I won’t want to get to the end)

Bonuses: Interesting conversations that stimulate new thoughts; Images that evoke sharp recognitions of truth or ‘fit’; balanced prose that the writer is in control of, and enjoying; Going somewhere new with companions (characters) that will remain after the book is closed; being trusted by the author to read between the lines. Being startled.

A Shadow in Yucatan

Philippa Rees

Recaptures the dying sixties., Stephanie walks from pregnancy to pain through the world of betrayed promises and finds a steel resolve, and an unexpected friend.

Remember Bob Dylan and ‘Boots of Spanish Leather’? He walked these same streets to a bar in Coconut Grove before his guitar was amplified. Remember Joan Baez and Woodstock? Recall the flowers in the rifle barrels and the braziers of Aldermarston? What about Mary Quant, and Abbey Road? If you remember those, then this is may be for you. It will remind you, and help your children to know the country of your past, and why you sometimes seem disappointed.

This distilled novel fits no category: It is not exactly fiction because the story is true in essence, truer as myth; it is not poetry as such, there are too many insistent voices; it is not history although its place and time are past. It is simply experience singing a song, to the ears and eyes of memory.

It recaptures the optimism of innocence when all things still seemed possible; before the dreams surrendered to the grey men in grey suits. It tells Stephanie’s tragic story but her story is also the story of that golden time

Very Hiawatha rhythms, somnolent. For me too much so. I would prefer to see it written as line poetry. Having to be rather prima donna-ish these days because writing a long narrative poem which gets easily infected by other people's rhythms. So could not stay with yours as long as perhaps I should. ... view book

A compelling first chapter, believable kind of hysterical repetitive abuse, and the murder itself almost dream like, accidental. You do give Charlie the two sides of himself from the off which engages. Well done. Backed (not reciprocally...I don't do that unless I would have backed anyway, but than... view book
