Bricks and Bones

Louise Pennington

A walled up body over a hundred years old connects a fortune in lost gold to a corrupt, but powerful Brighton family...

The grisly find, followed by the murder of ex-girlfriend, Eve Cozens, becomes a catalyst for wealthy local man, John Gunn.

Gunn discovers that the body, tagged 126, is not that of a child, but a young adult suffering from dwarfism. Yet it is the newly minted Confederate Double Eagle, found with 126, that sets him on the trail of the greatest shipwreck mystery of the Civil War era and the disappearance of not only half a billion pounds worth of gold, but also a cache of fabulous jewellery donated by the wives of Confederate supporters of the time.

A numismatist – or coin collector – Gunn finds himself irresistibly drawn into the murky world of the Venables, a prominent Brighton family with strong criminal connections and, in the process, uncovers a macabre family secret steeped in violence, sadism and treachery.

Thanks, Betsy. Strange how people differ in their take on things. Some of the comments on Eve's reactions are quite the opposite to your own, but I do understand where you're coming from. After all, aren't we writers supposed to be able to get inside people's heads? Will take a look at your own ... view book

Andrew - thanks for the comments and glad you like B&B. Think you may have delved into it before. I was offline for a couple of months as I had problems with my site. So, yes, had to reregister and start all over again. As to style - mine is a little quirky. I'm one of those annoying people who... view book

Ivan - really like your writing style. I think original is the word. I was going to say that creating a character who can't move the muscles in his face is brave. It's not brave, simply very clever! Next on my list to back... Best, Louise - and thanks for the things you said about BRICKS AND BON... view book

The synopsis tells us there's a lot going on, trouble is it's a little difficult to tell which way you're going from this first page - black comedy/drama/mystery? Nevertheless, it's intriguing, original and well written which made me want to read more, despite the opening para (a little confusing!)... view book
