about me

Shelfstealers has just launched its first four books in the US and my novel, "I, Said the Rook", is next in line for publication later this year.
In the meantime I have completed the first draft of my new project, a novel entitled "Earlforward", and have edited the first part, which I thought authonomy contributors might like to see.
It tells the story of the production of a musical on the West End stage in the late 1950s from inception to opening night, tracing the lives of some of those involved.

It is the late 1950s and the lives of those involved in a new musical destined for London's West End are echoed in its plot..

The invasion of American musicals in London after World War 2 has shown that any story, however unlikely, can be used for source material. A London producer proposes to adapt the Arnold Bennett classic Riceyman Steps .Earlforward is the main charcter and the novel that takes his name tells the story of the production from inception to opening night, showing how such a project brings a kind of permanency to lives that are otherwise uncertain and, in most cases, unsatisfactory.
The relationships of those involved follow the three parts of the novel: auditions, rehearsals and performance, only the first of which is uploaded here. The total length is about 90,000 words

I asked a question on the forum about uploading poetry on authonomy and someone came up with your name. I have read only a few of your poems, including these on page 2 and find them brilliant. I particularly enjoyed the humour. You are the only other person I have encountered who has heard of Ogden ... view book

I think authors who publish editor's comments on their books are very brave, but I am puzzled by this one and not sure that it is very much help to you as a fledgling author. The editor seems to be writing about a different book. I have searched in vain through chapter 9 for the passages he/she quot... view book

Alice: I have just encountered your memoirs and thoroughly enjoyed reading a few chapters. I hope to return to more later and in the meantime am happy to back it. You have managed to recall a wealth of evocative detail and recount it with lucid prose. It has encouraged me to consider uploading some ... view book

Thank you for backing I Said the Rook. Partly for that, and partly because you are obviously a good writer with something to say I wanted to be as kind as I could about Nothing you can do. You have apparently reworked it and perhaps there is even more you can do. I first wrote Rook many years ago, t... view book

I enjoyed the first part of Lickety Split and found the writing amusing and lively. I was not too sure about the scene on the bus. Having lived and travelled in London for many years, I found the reactions of the other passengers a little hard to swallow. But then perhaps things have changed since I... view book
