about me

A dyslexic refugee from Northern England, I have been based in London since the late 1980s, and have had careers in advertising and children’s TV. That was before I began work on the book that has turned out to be The Mango Orchard, just under five years ago.

The story has been featured on BBC radio, I have had discussions about TV documentaries, feature films and even an opera, but at the moment I am concentrating on getting the book published, which will take place in March 2010. The publisher is Preface, an imprint of Random House.

I'd like to thank the all my friends on Authonomy for helping me in the final edits of the book.

Oh, and thanks to my mate Giles for the cover design. If anyone wants a cover done, he's at: studio@gilescooke.com

Hi Maxine, I've just begun this, but am already won over. You write with great wit and verve, and, essentially bearing in mind the subject matter, unblinking lack of sentimentality. Some of the phrases I loved: - "...lose her head when all around her were keeping theirs" - "Her face was purp... view book

Oh, one other thought/question is about the name, Big Fish. I understand why you have it, and like it a great deal. My question is about the film of the same name which came out only 5 years ago... May not be a worry to you, but it did occur to me cheers r view book

HI Andrew, This really is a delight. It's fresh, crisply written, funny and intriguing with some really clever lines: "Not a solution but perhaps an answer."to name but one. The end of the prologue leads us on very deftly to chapter 1, on which I had no comments, other to say it was thoroughly... view book

Hi there, this is very impressive writing. Obviously very well researched, the dialogue and the details ring true. You manage to capture a time and place winningly. I don't have any other comments. Very impressed. Shelved cheers robin view book

As befitting a book in such an exalted position, CAFS is a pleasure to read. The premise is an interesting one and you manage to keep pulling the reader through. The end of chapter 2 is a particularly good lead-on. Good use of humour too. Just a couple of comments where I wanted a bit more: - ... view book
