about me

For 25 years I limited my writing skill to perfecting legal briefs. Since 2005 I have written three novels and have two more developed. Combining my writing skill with storytelling is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I become lost in the story every time I sit at the keyboard.

The Leading Man

David B. Hydes

Horrendous childhood events bring Teddy an altered reality. Life is a movie. THEY are the directors. Extras die; Leading men live.

A psychotic boy must master the movie of life to save the only thing he has left, his little sister Amy. Through his therapist, the television, he unlocks the mystery of life. Life is an infinite movie wherein leading men survive and extras suffer and die horrible deaths. Teddy must become a leading man to save Amy; but it seems THEY always present him with more requirements. So much is expected of a leading man. Must Teddy kill extras to obtain leading status? Can he? The questions frighten him; the answers haunt him.

From the Blood of Slaves

DB Hydes

A great Slave Army is amassed to defeat the Confederacy after the South's war-ending victory over Lincoln and the North at Manassas.

The Army of the North suffers defeat at Manassas. Rebel forces are rallied to cross the Potomac and take Washington. Union Citizens lose their weak resolve for war and Lincoln resigns in disgrace. Outraged abolitionists build a vast army of displaced slaves and arm them with Spencer rifles. Victory over the North spreads joy throughout the Confederacy but its economy teeters on collapse. Southern whites are unprepared to adequately defend the destructive resolve of the slave forces.

President Hamlin, President Davis and the abolitionist leader use deceit and treachery against one another as the slave army begins its campaign. The Union president plays all sides in his desire to legitimize his presidency. In the midst of political pretense and military madness tens of thousands perish.

A runaway slave and a Jewish Confederate officer find themseves on center stage within the conflict. Two different journeys lead to the same destination as death and depravity torment the two men. They realize that sanity can only be restored in their world by joining together to isolate the sadistic leader of the slave army. First they must avoid the deception of the Union President and the bigotry on both sides of the conflict.

A very interesting and emotional read; it leaves me with questions but am certain they will be answered in later chapters. You set out details sufficiently to give the reader an apt depiction of the child's environment, but not in such detail they become a drudge (ala Michener). The pace is right. I... view book

You create the imagery of the scene beautifully. I say with conviction you are one of the better writers on this site. You have a knack for painting a canvas of the scenes you lay out and weave them into a story-line. You are able to do so without it becoming the least bit cumbersome or laborious to... view book

This is some pretty off-the-wall stuff. Don't make me work too hard pulling it all together. It's a bit like Vonnegut meets Thompson. I wonder if they would have liked each other? DB view book

This is well written and very well edited. Short sentences and use of the present tense make it a little poetic and a little thespian. I grew up in Elk hunting country and Cal is more than the normal hunter. On a humorous note, my only critique is Cal's favorite English class where he learns he is t... view book

This is the most interesting read I have experienced on this site. I recommend it to everyone. I literally could not quit. I soon found a morning had passed by and I was on Chapter 17. What happens after the khmer take over is spellbinding. The piece could do with an edit, but the subject matter is ... view book
