The Old Farm By The Barrow

Philip Carlton

The story of how the modern world intrudes in a surviving prehistoric arcadia and how the ancient ways absorb it and continue.

There is a part of Britain unchanged for millennia, hilly and densely wooded, and bypassed almost entirely by all invaders for over three thousand years. It is a place where the old beliefs regarding nature and fertility and the need for sacrifice have continued into modern times, where a brother and sister farm in the same location where their family has lived through all those years, as evidenced by a bronze age round barrow visible from the windows of their home.
Into their world come two strangers. Both, in their different ways, will become a part of that ancient world, the girl by being assimilated into the family, the man as proof that more than the physical remains of that past have survived, and that the old ways have continued into the present and life and beliefs will go on into the future.

Hallam's Ghosts

Philip Carlton

22 stories, all very varied, original and entertaining. They will stay in your mind and leave you wanting more.

These stories range from the humorous to the sad. The action takes place mainly in hearts and minds. They are about feelings and emotions; about people and their relationships; people remembering their past with deep regret, sometimes guilt, or looking forward to a future which may or may not be what they hope; people we may see every day, but whose stories we don't know; people with memories and secrets, sometimes dark, usually life changing; people facing new situations where the location may be as important to the story as the characters.
There are light hearted stories about rivalry of the young and a new dog friend; two young people who bounce their banter off each other but know they belong together; nostalgia for young love in a simpler age.
They also tell of the choices we must make in life and the realization that we might have got them wrong; memories of youth and lost loves, happy times, regrets for opportunities missed; an old man with an unsuspected secret past brought back to mind by new events and startling revelations; and the mystic influence of the land and its history and age old beliefs surviving into the recent past.

I like to feel involved in stories that I read, and I certainly did with this. I noticed some of your comments say that this story would be ideal for children. Maybe I just never grew up. Good luck and best wishes. Phil. (Hallam's Ghosts) view book

I had no hesitation in in backing this. I loved the suggestion of mystery and a possible time slip, themes which I have tried to bring into a couple of my own stories. And I liked the humour. So it is on my shelf. Good luck and best wishes. Phil. (Hallam's Ghosts) view book

I have always been fascinated by anything to do with the American West, especially those stories that are based on fact, so I backed this as soon as I found it, after a very quick read. Good luck with this and best wishes. Phil. (Hallam's Ghosts) view book

I really enjoyed reading Seeking Eleanor and if a writer succeeds in getting a reader to enjoy their work then I suppose they have achieved what they set out to do. I thought this was a good story and beautifully written and it well deserves a place on my shelf. Good luck and best wishes. Phil. ... view book

I usually have a look at the start of a story, then a few places at random in the middle, then the end. Difficult to follow a plot, but I do get a good idea of how well the story is written and how consistent. I then try to decide if I like the book and if it is something I would want to read if I b... view book
