Thomas Settimi was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, but spent most of his early life in Rochester, Minnesota. He graduated from the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He holds a Master's Degree in Physics from the University of California at Riverside.

For much of his early professional career he was engaged in technical writing and engineering for the Department of the Navy and defense-related firms. He is the developer of dbOptic, a professional optical design software program published by Sky Scientific (Skyforest, California) and is interested in astronomical optics. He is currently Director of Operations for a manufacturing business in Southern California.
