about me

I've never tried to write anything until now but the name 'Tolly' - quite literally - just came to me out of the blue and I felt compelled to write about her. I am writing more stories, including ones which have more boys in them. The stories are aimed at 6-9 year old children.

I have had some lovely and very helpful feedback from adults and children, including from pupils from a primary school. If you have children/grandchildren I'd be delighted to email them to you so you can print them off for them to read!! I'm actually more interested in comments/criticism than backing.

II do apologise to everyone who has left me messages over the many weeks. I'm afraid I just don't get onto the site hardly at all now; if I can get back to reading and reviewing, I will.

Tolly's World

Carolyn Carter

Tolly’s dad died two years ago but she learns that he will always be with her and that it’s OK to have fun without him.

These stories follow nine year old TOLLY, her dog, POPPY, and best friend, HANNAH, through some sad times and many fun adventures. The stories are aimed at 6-9 year old children.

A misunderstanding means Hannah goes off with Becky Sands; is it Tolly’s fault? When all is explained, Tolly and Hannah realise that their friendship is very special.

The time arrives for the girls’ first lone adventure and, although it’s Poppy who makes a discovery, they all get rewarded.

A trip to the seaside means more than just ice-creams, when the girls are enlisted as film extras.

The village summer fair keeps the girls busy and Poppy re-unites a guinea pig with his owner.

Autumn arrives and when Tolly deliberately gets wet, it helps to mend the rift with Becky.

Tolly’s remembers the last party with her dad: could she have a similar party this year? Will the others laugh at her?

Snow brings difficulties for the farmer but fun for the girls, although their voices get a little heated.

It’s Christmas; Tolly not only gets the present she wants but she knows that, although she’ll never forget her dad, she is ready to move on with her life.

Your overall writing style matched beautifully the type of story and a feel of an 'old world' timeframe and I liked the overall premise for the story. Very occasionally, a tweek would improve the flow - e.g. beginning chp 3 - you use the word 'appeared' in two consecutive sentences and also then 'ap... view book

You describe people and places and create atmospheres well, both through the narrative and dialogue. Mike, Clint and Fulton are particularly well drawn and their relationships/interactions/dialogue are realistic; I wasn't as convinced by the Admiral, who felt more 'made-up' to me. Happy to back it... view book

Not a happy read, but a worthwhile one. The characters - human and animal - are well- (and frequently, disturbingly)drawn and the humans' cruelty is conveyed without sentimentality - and is all the more horrific for it; shelved, Carolyn. view book

Not a book I would have chosen to read normally (due to the characters' penchants, lifestyles and hence language!), but the writing is polished and the dialogue reads naturalistically. The mixed up anger at the impending death feels realistic; backed, Carolyn. view book

Sorry, can't offer you any helpful comments - I just read and enjoyed it! I like the characters, they interact well and the dialogue feels authentic. Good luck with this, shelved, Carolyn. view book
