about me

I'm best known as the author of six Young Adult science fiction novels that are also enjoyed by adults. All were originally published by Atheneum and have been republished, in both hardcover and paperback, by different publishers in the 21st century. ENCHANTRESS FROM THE STARS was a Newbery Honor book, winner of the 1990 Phoenix Award of the Children’s Literary Association, and a finalist for the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year in the Rediscovery category. My trilogy CHILDREN OF THE STAR was republished in one volume as adult science fiction, though it was originally intended for teens. (Its three novels have just been issued in e-book form. The first of the three, THIS STAR SHALL ABIDE, was published long ago in the UK as HERITAGE OF THE STAR -- people who have been looking for it under that title may be glad to know that it is now available separately again.)

STEWARDS OF THE FLAME is my first adult novel. I published it myself because it doesn’t fit genre marketing requirements -- though set in the future on another planet it appeals more to general audiences than to those with extensive science fiction background. This makes it unsuitable for SF publishers, though many science fiction readers enjoy it, and in any case I want it to reach other readers, too. At present I am working on a sequel.

Stewards of the Flame

Sylvia Engdahl

Crime is considered illness, untreated illness is crime; ambulance crews are the only police. Dead bodies stay on “life support” forever. Can anyone gain freedom?

When burned-out starship captain Jesse Sanders is seized by a dictatorial medical regime and detained on the colony planet Undine, he has no idea that he is about to be plunged into a bewildering new life that will involve ordeals and joys beyond anything he has ever imagined, as well as the love of a woman with powers that seem superhuman. Still less does he suspect that he must soon take responsibility for the lives of people he has come to care about and the preservation of their hopes for the future of humankind.

Winner of a bronze medal in the Visionary Fiction category of the 2008 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards, this controversial novel deals with government-imposed health care, end-of-life issues, and the so-called paranormal powers of the human mind. Though set in the distant future on another world, it appeals not only to science fiction readers but to others who question the dominant medical philosophy of today’s society, or who value personal freedom of choice.

Thank you for your comments, Bill. I have just published a new edition of this book, formatted to match the sequel. (I got my own ISBN this time, which wasn't possible for individual books at the time I published the BookSurge edition that I 'm taking off the market.) I think I fixed all the typos.... view book

Thank you, Sylvia! I can't imagine how that typo (omission of "enough") has been overlooked this long, after all the times I (and others) have proofread the book -- I just checked the print and e-book editions, and was appalled to see it! I'm a professional freelance copyeditor, so this is embarra... view book

Trudy, I'd love to have it in more libraries, but they rarely buy print-on-demand books because library journals don't review them, and because they're not stocked by the distributors libraries use. One of the best ways to get a book into a library is for it to be requested by a reader -- many libra... view book

I don't think there's too much history in the first chapter, though there are a few details that could be cut to make it move faster. The problem, I believe, is the way it's phrased. Who is Hazel telling this to? Right now it sounds as if she's telling us, the readers of a book, rather than peopl... view book
