about me

I'm the proud father of two unpublished novels and both are much improved because of Authonomy and its wonderful people. I've had a fairly successful professional career for a wee boy from Glasgow, but I'm bored with all that nonsense, so it's time to follow the dream; published author or bust.

favourite books

I have wide and varied taste, from the real classics like 1984, Brave New World, A Passage to India, The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, through to the future classics like Shantaram and The Boy with the Striped Pyjamas. I'm also a Neville Shute fan - I guess he takes me back to my Tiger and Hotspur days.

The best relaxation novels I've read recently are Lee Child's Jack Reacher books and Christopher Bookmyre's Glasgow crime/comedy creations.

I've read shelves full of business books and most of them were complete tosh, but I did love Colin Powell's A Soldier's Way and Rudi Guilliani's Leadership.

Would you dance with a Glaswegian Devil to succeed?

Raised to understand the price of wrong, two wannabe DJ’s face an intense moral dilemma; whether to work for the Glaswgian Godfather who controls the pub and club scene, or stand by their principles and starve their ambitions of the oxygen of opportunity.

Set in the late Eighties, Hot Chocolate watches through its fingers as the boys make life-altering decisions and grow up quickly managing the fallout.

In a market swamped with heroes and villains, this is a new angle about two undecideds caught in the crossfire. Based on a true story, it's a dark comedy/drama, laced with vivid Eighties imagery and music.

The novel was intended as a one-off, but it spawned a number of enduring characters and plotlines. The grand plan is develop those into a hub and spoke series of interlinked novels.

Hot Chocolate is complete at c.90,000 words. To those, who've already read it, thank you. With your help, I've chopped 1500 words from Chapter 1 (ouch!).

Play Away

Will Sparks

A packed stadium. An international footballing fiesta. The crowd expects..... Someone else! Sun, fun, romance and Norwegian supermodels. Comedy is back!

Play Away (now updated) is a comedy founded on a true story.

In 1989, my amateur football team flew to Spain for an end-of-season football tour. Sun, fun and a holiday kickaround. Or so we thought. Unintentional impostors, we faced two matches against professional clubs, one from the same league as Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Spanish FA had mistaken us for Bristol City!

This is a footballing Full Monty with the bumbling, unravelling plotline of Four Weddings and Funeral. Through the conversion to a novel, the natural comedy of real interchanges between real people remains intact. If you’ve ever been on a single-sex group holiday or played team sports you will see yourself reflected in the book.

Underlying the main plot is a reassurance that, given time and the right stimulus, most boys will leave behind their laddishness and mature into fully-functioning, responsible members of society. But some need more help than others…..

Fun, sun, romance and comedy, this is something to make everyone smile.

2009 marks the twentieth anniversary of the tour, which is a great hook for publicity and another good reason for publishing it now.

Ed, This is feckin' brilliant. I've read a number on Authonomy, shelved some and run a mile from others. There's a whole bunch in the middle, like me, who need people to read their books and help them solve their problems. Sadly, the world just doesn't work like that most of the time. My only advice... view book

This is just spectacular. I really feel your emotion for these people. It felt in places like Shantaram - that third party description of wonder the writer had previously not experienced. It is packed with facts that are interesting and worth reading, without sounding like a textbook. My only q... view book

I liked this. The small town USA feel is terrific. I went to Cape Cod a few years ago and the baseball game was exactly as you described. If I had criticism, it would be to say that perhaps a little more description in with the dialogue would help the reader feel it a little better. Are their hands ... view book

Great stuff. I enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and alive, your scene-setting is great and there are so many unanswered questions that it I wouldn't be able to put this down once I picked it up. My only comment would be that, in places you could maybe take out some words and make it fl... view book

This is good. An interesting premise. Easy, smooth writing. I think you'll benefit from the feedback I've been so grateful for and then you'll do well. I'll WL you and check on progress. Best. Will. Hot Chocolate view book
