about me

*Many apologies if I don't respond to a comment or message quickly--I'm probably lost in the midst of some academic landfill. I don't mean to be rude, and I guarantee I will reciprocate in time.*

**I have three books posted here: RBC is a vampire novel, Feathered is an Urban Fantasy novel about a woman trying to live her life with wings, and Phase Shift is an unfinished fantasy/Sci Fi (mainly fantasy) novel about the conflict between magic and technology. I'd love feedback on any of them, but comments on Phase Shift would be especially helpful since it is still being written. Thanks in advance for any feedback!**

I'm a graduate student in applied linguistics, but I also happen to enjoy writing urban fantasy novels. I teach English as a second language, and I'm fascinated by foreign languages and language structure (hence the linguistics). In the past I've studied/worked in speech language pathology and audiology, and I worked as a veterinary technician for five years, so I also have an interest in the medical field.

I prefer reading and writing about those things that go bump and flash boom in the night--demons, vampires, dragons, wizards, those kinds of things. I also don't mind the odd mystery novel. I love writing fiction, but my academic papers have been taking precedence for revisions. While my work may still need editing, I think that my characters and stories are engaging, and I hope that you have as much fun reading them as I had writing them.

Phase Shift

Tamara Boyens

Kaiya thought she was retired, but an elite shapeshifting assassin's job is never done. Someone has to save the world, right?

**This is an unfinished draft, so I am leaving the full pitch blank for now, and I have not broken the novel up into sensible separate chapters yet. I would still appreciate feedback from any Fantasy fans out there! Thanks!**

RBC

Tamara Boyens

A vampire novel that mixes classic Western legends with ancient Japanese myths to create a modern urban fantasy thriller.

Red blood cells. Suzana hates her nickname. Her coworkers at The Bureau of Daywalker Affairs have taken to calling her RBC because she shares her taste for blood with the rogue vampires that haunt Southern California.

As natural enemies of vampires, daywalkers are charged with executing the blood suckers that violate federal treaty laws, but she shares more in common with her adversaries than her colleagues know. A misanthropic loner, her behavior is tolerated by The Bureau only because of her unparalleled strength and vicious battle skills.

When a lethal entity emerges and begins killing vampires and humans alike, her estranged lover returns from exile, and his hazardous decision forces Suzana to confront a life laced with secrets. She is obligated to travel across North America to battle the monster, but the most perilous journey she must take is into her own history that started centuries ago in ancient Japan.

If Suzana can't unravel the mystery of her own creation, then humans, daywalkers, and vampires will all be consumed by a force older than the gods.

Feathered

Tamara Boyens

It's not easy being Feathered. Omari has a very normal veterinarian job in Northern California, but her winged life is anything but typical.

Being born as a victim of Icarus Syndrome, Omari has to deal with the consequences of being winged. A victim of cruel medical experiments as a child, she does her best to live a normal life despite the fact that she is graced with enormous feathered wings.

Although she owns her own veterinary practice, Omari has difficulties forming lasting friendships, and her love life is pitted with long strings of one night stands and cursory flings. Trained in the martial art Aikido, she takes solace in the peace found in meditation and consulting with her fellow Aikido teachers.

The rhythm of her daily life is disturbed when she returns to a destroyed house full of dead animals, and she is severely injured by the same wicked trap. While Omari searches for those responsible for the attack, Noah, a courageous paramedic, becomes involved in the investigation, and romance blooms between them in the ensuing chaos.

Omari must find and stop the people attempting to harm her before both her and Noah's lives are lost.

Loved it!! I'm a long time Stephen King fan, and I'm attracted to anything with both violence and wit. You've got both of those and more! Definitely backed. view book

This has a very poetic style to it, and I like the almost dreamy quality to it. This has all the marks of a great fantasy novel--backed happily and I wish you the best of luck. view book

I was dubious at first because I'm usually not interested in books with religious themes--but this is entertaining and I appreciate the somehow tongue in cheek moments of humor! view book

I like the foreshadowing in the first paragraph! I love the humorous aspects (I'm a big fan of sarcasm and irony). Backed for interesting story and great style. view book
