about me

When I was eight, my mum gave me her copy of The Hobbit. I couldn’t get past the first chapter. A few months later, I was off sick from school and, having read everything else in the house that was remotely suitable for an eight-year-old boy, I picked up The Hobbit again. And didn’t put it down until I reached the end. I decided I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. How differently things might’ve turned out had I been a slightly healthier child...

So here I am, thirty-mumble years, five complete novels and assorted false starts later. Am I a writer yet? Am I grown up yet? You tell me...

My novel Death & Magic is on sale in the Kindle Store at http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0059HBSRI (UK) or http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0059HBSRI (USA) and on Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/72540. It's available in print at http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/death-magic/16378204. A sequel, Plague & Poison, is available from the same outlets.

Apart from writing, my main claim to fame is that I directed a short film that’s had over two million views on YouTube. It’s a sketch about one of the hazards of getting older: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oHBG3ABUJU I also made a film noir spoof about a writer who’s stuck for ideas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmEdrhmMB1Q I think it's much funnier, but it's not nearly as popular yet.

Death & Magic

Steven J Pemberton

The only thing worse than having to figure out which of your new teachers is a murderer is becoming the next victim.

(This book was previously known as A Wizard's Daughter.)

Apprentice wizard Adramal wants nothing more than to be a healer. But when she moves to a new school to complete her training, she discovers that several ritual murders have been committed by magic, threatening the fabric of the world. The evidence points to the killer being one of Adramal’s teachers, and the City Watch recruit her to go undercover to unmask the murderer.

The task is more daunting than she anticipated – for apprentices are forbidden from using magic outside the classrooms. Hands tied, she turns to Perinar, the shy librarian whose dusty volumes might hold the secret of the reason for the killings. But can she find what she needs before the killer strikes again or – worse – without blowing her cover and putting her own life in danger?

The book is on sale in the Kindle Store - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0059HBSRI for UK readers and http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0059HBSRI for the USA. It's also on Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/72540

Four months with no comments... that must be a record for Authonomy. This isn't the sort of thing I would normally choose to read, but it held my interest for the eight chapters that I read - the writing is good, and the characters are interesting. My main concern is that there's little or no ten... view book

I can see why this is so high in the chart. It's one of the best books I've come across in quite a while - creepy and funny, and written with an effortless self-assurance. A couple of small points... When Blake demolishes the library, he destroys a case containing rare books. Maybe school librari... view book

Hmm. I like the premise and the characters, but the way the story is narrated is confusing. It's not always clear whose point of view you're in - Max or MODOC or an omniscient narrator - and the switches between first person and third person are disconcerting. I'm not sure whether the story is meant... view book

I don't read literary fiction, so I might not know what I'm talking about, but I'm afraid this didn't hold my interest. I read the first two chapters and, not seeing much evidence of a clever plot or tight dialogue, didn't read further. I would reconsider your pitch. If I'd come across it while b... view book

I see I'm not the only one who thinks this sounds like The Secret Diary of Stewie Griffin - gross, surreal and laugh-out-loud funny. I'll back it when a slot frees up on my shelf. One small point - Spider-Man lives in New York City, not LA. Where else would he find all those skyscrapers to swing ... view book
