about me

Artemis Rayne - which is me, why am I talking about myself in the third person...? Start over. I, Artie, am a twenty-two year old aspiring writer currently stuck within the state of Utah due to a certain annoying lack of finances brought on by the overwhelmingly expensive American higher education system. I'm currently studying Broadcast Media Journalism at Utah State University and spend the large majority of my regrettably limited free time working on any of my numerous novels that somehow never seem to reach completion. Or even chapter two half of the time.

When not writing, I enjoy musical theatre (the sillier the better), performing both improv and stand-up comedy, and filming video-blogs for my YouTube channel - or at least will once I get the camera on my laptop working properly or can afford a separate one, whichever comes first. I have an unhealthy addiction to Dr. Pepper and Oreos, am dyslexic, and have an unconscious tendency to talk to inanimate objects. So basically, I'm your typical every-person.

Also I have a cat named Mojo who is the love of my life, and who threatened to shred all of the toilet tissue if I didn't mention him. Yeah, you can tell who wears the trousers in this house, can't you?

This year I participated in (and won!) NaNoWriMo 2011, writing a young adult fantasy novel called "Scheherazade's Mirror," which you can view on my fictionpress.com page using the link below. Once it's completed and in the revision stages it will be posted here for critique.

Scheherazade's Mirror

Artemis Rayne

Because sometimes legends aren't just stories, and what lies on the other side of the mirror is far worse than reality.

Gideon knew right away that there was something strange about the new mirror at his father's museum, one that legends say belonged to the famous storyteller, Queen Scheherazade. When his jealous best friend Jason dares him to touch it at night, when it's supposed to be at it's most powerful, they are both in for a surprise. Thrown into a dangerous new world beyond the glass, Gideon and Jason must work past their bitter feelings for each other to find the mirror's magic gem that can send them home.

But there are dark forces in this new land that neither of them could have ever expected. Evil maharajahs, sinister djinns, and exotic assassins populate the treacherous world of Scheherazade's tales. It may take more than these two teens have in them to find their way home from the land wilder than imagination itself.

Step aside, Mr. Disney, because this time the fairy tale ending belongs to the prince.

Once upon a time, in a coastal Washington town, a young boy lived under the cruelty of an evil step-father named Doug and two equally moronic and rude step-brothers. Even in school he was treated like nothing for his lanky frame and artistic ambitions. His only comforts in the world were his art, his best friend Zarayha, and his dreams of escape. But that boy was destined for greatness of the kind you only ever see in the storybooks - the kind that is chock-full of mystery and magic and triumph and a healthy dose of high school romance.

That boy is me, Jacob Alan Barnes. And this is my story.

Manuscript completed at 51k words.

Fallen

Artemis Rayne

Raphael had waited too long for this chance at redemption to let this obnoxious woman ruin it. Too bad he actually kind of liked her.

Nearly five hundred years ago, Raphael was banished to spend eternity on earth as a monster. Now his only chance for redemption lies in the hands of a sarcastic young woman named Max and a mission to save the universe from destruction.

Raphael and Max are immediately thrown into a world of religious prophecy and age old wars of good and evil. Pursued by demons and angels alike, the pair have to traverse the world to restore the Pillars of Faith. All the while their pasts unwind around them, sending them deeper into the fight and threatening to tear them apart from within.

A thrilling adventure, Fallen takes the reader on a tour of the world and through the greatest mysteries and magics of religion in a compelling story of action, acceptance, and learning to find faith in what matters the most.

I've only had the chance to read the first chapter so far, but I just wanted to stop in and say that I am completely astounded already. Your character and set up is absolutely wonderful, real and three dimensional. Blake's humour is charming and relatable, and the narrative that runs through his min... view book

Absolutely amazing. I'm really glad that I was able to take some time to sit and read this. It was not at all what I was expecting to find, but it was a wonderfully pleasant surprise. The narrative is clear, poignant, and striking. Your characters are given a very obvious sense of person and I am ne... view book

Andrew, Wow. At the moment I'm having a hard time coming up with anything more constructive than that. I started this with the intention of only reading the first chapter or two, but here I am at the end of chapter six and only stopping because unfortunately the real work is reminding me I have a... view book

No, I am so devastated, I've read all ten chapters and there are no more to be had! I had only intended to read about the first three chapters, and next thing I knew I was at the bottom of chapter ten wondering why the arrow to go to the next chapter was missing. Absolutely captivating. The voice of... view book

Lisa, Wow, this is a truly powerful, heart-wrenching story. I was a little leery about being able to read this, like the last person to comment I have similar personal issues, but I am glad I did. Your story is empowering, heart-touching, and really gives hope to those who have lived through simi... view book
