about me

I've been retired from the airline industry and living happily on the Costa del Sol for the past eleven years.

Based on the infamous ''Albert Guay Affair,'' my novel has recently been completed following six years of dedicated research; including frequent trips to Canada, where I studied trial records in Quebec, and interviewed people linked to the case. Along the way I befriended surviving relatives of some of those caught up in the tragic events, and I was directly involved in organizing the first memorial service ever held for those who were lost.
Although I have chosen to change all of the names in my narrative, the majority of the characters actually existed. The surviving family of ''Liffey MacBaine,'' the novel's protagonist/heroine, became personal friends, and gave me their full backing in my interpretation of her idividual story.

As far as I am aware Cape Torment is one of two novels inspired by the debacle, and is the only one to adhere as closely as it does to the known facts of the case.

Despite the book's dark subject matter, I have attempted to lighten the narrative as much as possible; introducing moments of humour and making the diverse characters as interestingly believable and as colourful as I could.

I would be grateful for any feedback - good or bad - from anyone kind enough to read a chapter or two.

Many thanks for your time. And good luck to all of you ''authonomites'' out there; burning the midnight oil as I do, and ever dreaming of being published

If you followed the Wikipedia link from ''The Albert Guay Affair'' I'd be extremely grateful to receive any comments from you here, or at : richardm.mark1@gmail.com

And, for anyone who might be interested, I currently have a short book trailer on Youtube. Just enter ''Cape Torment'' or ''Albert Guay'' in the search box.

CAPE TORMENT (CAP TOURMENTE)

Richard Donovan

Based on a true story from the nineteen-forties, Cape Torment recreates the incredible events surrounding one of Canada's most infamous and diabolical crimes.

Quebec City jeweller, Marcel Gagnon, is desperate to be free to marry his stunning, teenage mistress, Therese Sainte-Angele. But divorce is an impossible option in his repressive Catholic community, and his frustration mounts when Therese threatens to leave him. Determined to get what he wants, he resorts to committing an unprecedented atrocity; one that wrecks lives and ultimately leaves the world a less trusting place.
Rita Gagnon is the loyal wife, fighting for the man who loathes her, swearing to honour her marriage vows to the end of her days.
Marguerite Laval is the coarse, small-time felon who dresses in black, and runs errands for the jeweller she owes money to.
Xavier Levesque - her crippled brother - is Gagnon's womanizing, clock-maker assistant.
And Liffey MacBaine is the pretty airline stewardess from Alberta, haunted by her past, and longing to be reunited with the daughter she gave up for adoption in the midst of appalling tragedy.
All of these characters are researched representations of the real people whose lives were forever bound by an unparalleled act of cold-blooded evil. Who will live and who will die is the question answered in this full length novel's climactic scenes.

Sorry if I was not able to get back to you soon enough, Jo. But I have now started ''Who Shot the President'' and I like it. The dedicated effort you're putting into getting to the editors desk certainly warrants fair recognition and I have given you an early top star-rating along with a placement o... view book

Hi Karen. I'm enjoying this a lot. Being an ex-pat living in in Spain I can easily relate to some of the trials and tribulations you write about. I love the humour in your writing - an essential part of an immigrants survival pack- and I've certainly chuckled a lot as I've read along. Faking it in F... view book

This book is as good as tonic, Lena. You have a wonderful sense of humour, which shines through in your writing. You made me laugh, so thank you, but at the same time you manage to keep the reader seriously involved with Maggie as the story evolves to become an excellent thriller in every sense of ... view book

I've spent a good part of the morning reading A Friend of the Family, being forced to leave it, now, due to the day's commitments. I think this is an excellent piece of writing, crafted with love and clearly well researched. Donovan's engrossing and gruelling story kept reminding me of those that ... view book

Dear Maretha, I must say that I've found your book to be truly enchanting. Flame and his friends are very endearing characters and I can imagine children ( and adults ) falling in love with them. Their trials and tribulations are related skillfully; some of the scenes are quite touching. Your love ... view book
