about me

In the past I have worked as a technical author, a music teacher, and I now work as a traditional Chinese medicine acupuncturist.

I have been writing seriously for about twenty years, initially writing mainly novels, though in all this time the only skill I seem to have perfected is the ability to remain unpublished.

In 2008, I started writing short stories and quickly developed a strong affinity for the form. Every aspect of it seems to suit my approach, my themes and what I have to say. I like the discipline of only working with a set of characters for about one month, rather than a year or two, and having to portray all that I want to say in a limited number of words, and also having to construct a pleasing form to the story at the same time. Also, when you consider the short attention span that popular media is inexorably instilling in people these days, it occurs to me that the short story form does now seem more appropriate for many readers than the novel form does. But if a piece of literature can provide an experience that is better than the experience of the highest quality film or TV drama, and do it in the same time span, then perhaps many more readers will be wooed back to the written word.

Content wise, I have always been interested in personality and communication and these themes feature heavily in my writing, along with quirky humour and also the portrayal of the extraordinary states that often exist in many ordinary situations.

Stories from a Leaking Mind

Fletcher Kovich

A collection of short stories, some humorous, some thoughtful, some disturbing, some just plain daft, and some are all of the above.

Some of the stories are interrelated, though all of them are complete in themselves:

A nurse tends to a dying man who unwittingly reveals to her how to heal the wounds within herself.

Samuel Pam’s life is plagued by strangers who whisper to him unwanted messages of a sexual nature.

Andrea Segovia is addicted to correcting other people’s mistakes and when she meets her new boyfriend, she finds that she has plenty of work to do.

Daniel’s disabilities are not immediately obvious, yet when he is forced to face them, he becomes overwhelmed.

A woman stumbles into a gallery and finds pictures of her own life displayed there.

In a tropical paradise, the boundaries are blurred between love and terrorism—but then perhaps those boundaries are blurred everywhere.

A doctor, who is racked by guilt, is contemplating suicide, but are his misdeeds imaginary?

A nameless man overspends his way into performing a televised act of brutality on a random victim.

And at the end of each day, I am left with the feeling that there must be holes in my mind somewhere, for all these stories have leaked out.

The Tragedy of Homisidehampton....

Fletcher Kovich

A comic, allegorical novel about the communication problems that drive a whole town into a frenzy of murderous activity.

Something strange is happening in Homisidehampton. Peter Choppem, the town’s Member of Parliament, is outraged by “impolite” behaviour and he begins a campaign to stamp it out, which involves him performing a vicious form of gardening in other people’s gardens. Meanwhile his wife, Sally, is convinced that everyone is plotting against her and she devises various counterplots to expose their devious tricks, which only seems to result in her deeply wounding her supposed attackers.

The pressing question of Peter’s (or Sally’s) sanity is never raised, as the whole town is preoccupied with the activity of a mass murderer who has been busying himself amongst them for some weeks now. However, the reader will soon become acquainted with what Peter considers to be “gardening” and also with the evil “seeds” that he is attempting to eradicate. It is in this eccentric manner that he has now chosen to serve his community and only you can judge the rights or wrongs of his conduct.

The book is a fast-moving comic novel with vivid characters, some of which are purely comic, while others have their inner, troubled lives portrayed in, sometimes, alarming detail. It is also a book of ideas.

Kenneth- This book reminds me of Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage." I love the conflict that you displayed in yourstory. The opening chapters are really comprehensive. Zhiling- Effective imagery, great flow of emotions, a dozen of moral lessons make this book worth reading. I have read some chapters in your book and those were enough to convince me that you, as a writer, have the gift of literature. Dyana- To be honest, I have just read one chapter of your work and I can really feel the emotions and see things very clearly from a child's perspective. The words you used are so fluid and transparent to be understood and absorb quickly. I like the way you structure your ideas and the clarity of... view book

Marcus- I have unfinished reading your work yet but I found it fascinating and intruiging at the same time. There is a dark feeling in your theme that I can really feel it in your words. There is a good element in your structures and the language is very transparent. I feel that it is a great... view book
