A Sojourn of Sorts

Douglas Le Blanc

Cuttlefish Island -- a grand island full of sand, palm trees, sand, rocks, sand, dirt, and sand...

...But it’s all that 12-year-old Geel Fisher has known. He longs to sail to the grander islands, but how can he ignore his community's warning about the danger abroad? When a magician in need of help lands on the tiny island, Geel feels he must go. Besides, he’ll only be away for a day.

Alchemist Gawny and Healer Elma soon join Geel and the magician, and -- with the addition of the Princess and the Warrior Boy -- they soon have an entire band of eccentric adventurers. But the fun doesn’t last for long...

“I don’t sit down to write for any particular age group. In my mind, I’m writing for everyone. As I see it, I don’t write for kids, I write about kids.”

The spirit behind these words of Jerry Spinelli is the driving force behind my writing style; I write the adventure that I would love to read now, but through the medium of children’s literature. I think that this helps to create a lasting story for all ages.

Complete at 85,000 words, this classical fantasy novel is character driven and written from the Christian worldview.

Hi Bek, I have read the first two chapters. You have sucked me in. I look forward to reading more as I get the chance. I'm putting this on my shelf. Will give more feedback later. This for now: For constructive criticism, the prose sometimes seems a bit wordy (I struggle with the same thing). ... view book

Hi Mark, I read the first four chapters thru, then skimmed the rest. Like Old Bob said in his comment below, I too am not a writing pro -- just an aspiring author. My comments aren't meant to hurt, but help. Anytime we aren't honest with someone, we are only hurting, not helping. The premise... view book

M.K., I just finished reading the first chapter. A fantastic concept! And well executed too. I think that the narrator's occasional asides work well, and contrast nicely with the child-like writing of the letters. Humorous, serious, and flows well.... I will try to read more when I get the chance... view book

I read the first eight chapters. This books reads amazingly well, keeping the reader attached with its simple and compelling style. Nice work! Might I offer some constructive criticism? I noted that in the first chapter you mention dreaming about being a journalist. In the second chapter, you dre... view book
