about me

Written in 1977, 'The Lorestone' was finally self-published in 2007 and is available on Amazon. However, I know it needs some revision and rewriting - in fact I've already begun that task(Chapters 1 - 3 rewritten and uploaded). The plan is to republish it again at some point in the future - so I welcome all comments good or bad and will be grateful for any suggestions that help me improve my work.
'The Lorestone' (178,000 words) began as a stand-alone book and can be read as such, but the promptings of its small fan base persuaded me to continue with the story. Book two 'Gateway To Elvendom' (85,000 words) and book three 'Wyrd's End '(97,000 words) are both complete but exist in manuscript form only. All three books now comprise The Elwardain Trilogy.
I have been looking for representation for many a long year - (anyone who remembers the Penman Literary Agency, with whom I had dealings in the late 1980s, please get in touch )- and I can be emailed at lorestone@btinternet.com.

favourite books

I enjoy a wide range of fiction and non-fiction and my favourite authors include Tolkein, Arthur Conan Doyle, JK Rowling, Stephen King, Rose Tremain, Hilary Mantell, Ian McEwan and Bill Bryson. I love Shakespeare and Chaucer, have even read Pepys Diary in its entirety, but my favourite book of all time just has to be 'Precious Bane' by Mary Webb.

The Lorestone

Carol Browne

A sword-and-sorcery fantasy set in Anglo-Saxon England, in which a gently-evolving love story is set against a background of magic, humour and adventure.

Being banished from Elvendom is bad enough, taking refuge among the Saxons seems even worse, but life is not destined to improve for young Elgiva, when she reluctantly embarks upon the quest for the legendary Lorestone - the only thing with the power to save Elvendom from the evil that threatens to destroy it. At least there is help to be found along the way from a timid elf boy and a petulant pony - and from one man in particular, who will teach Elgiva the importance of friendship. But can Elgiva's friends help her to find the Lorestone before it falls into the wrong hands?

The first paragraph hooks the reader at once and then you have created a new crime-fighting duo and a very unusual one. This is the sort of partnership that would evolve over perhaps a series of books of their adventures and become something extremely compelling. On my watchlist. Good luck Carol... view book

This is a great idea for a children's book - but given that the price of electricity keeps going up and the fact that most of the nation seems to be overweight, I'm surprised that someone hasn't already thought of it in the real world! view book

Beautifully written and so easy to read. I immediately sympathised with Isobel. Her awkwardness with David is protrayed so well and yet so economically. It took me back many years to a time when I went through a similar period in life, one I try to forget! Writing of this quality will always resonat... view book

Beautiful, lyrical writing. This feels as though it needs to be read aloud, like a saga related in a Meadhall in days of old! Great atmosphere and enchanting images. On my watchlist. view book
