Secure Beneath the Watchful Ey....

Matthew Sharp

Voyeurism, obsession and the darker side of sexual desire combine to entwine the lives of a number of disparate characters in contemporary London.

Dale is a Community Surveillance Officer - a 'watcher'. Employed by the government, hated by the population, he monitors citizens of London, looking down upon their contemptuous actions, Godlike. But he cannot stop himself from watching one mysterious woman, and the succession of men she brings down that alleyway, needing to know what's she's doing down there, needing to meet her face to face.

Chris sits in his living room, quietly despising his father, wondering when he will meet someone that he can love. He agonises about his fragmenting family, about his sister who he loves more than anyone else, knowing that there's something not quite right about her.

Curiosity wins out and both characters are drawn deeper into a tangled web of voyeurism, obsession and sexual desire that will culminate in them finally meeting in a shocking finale.

And thank you for your kind praise. And also for looking at my book, as I can't imagine it to be the most life-affirming read. I've put The North Korean on my watchlist - it looks like a fascinating premise and I look forward to reading it. view book

Thanks very much for your comments, and for taking the time to read my book. I had to look up 'Story of O', uncultured swine that I am. Must swat up on my sadomasochistic literature... I've deliberated long and hard about using italics and there's a good chance that I'll change my mind again, I... view book

Hi, thanks again for your comments. I like the Roman emperor analogy and may steal that, if that's okay. I find myself wishing that I had put uploaded more chapters as, in truth, the first 10 chapters just set the scene and introduce characters. The next few chapters tell us more about Chris and... view book

This is genuinely worthy, well-written fiction, more in line with my tastes than anything else I have seen on Authonomy. It reminds me somehow of George Pelecanos - extremely readable, with an ear for contemporary slang and affection for all the characters, no matter what their background or outloo... view book

I've just read the first two chapters and, though I've recently been inundated with a lot of requests to read sci-fi or fantasy and was not anticipating great things from your novel, I am really enjoying this. The prose is very neat and readable, and you do not seek to over-describe locations, inst... view book
