about me

Good Evening.
I'm from Essex, in case you couldn't tell.

I'm not really a writer. I wrote essays at school, but only when i had to. I used to write lists - mainly top 10 lists. You know the sort of thing – 'Top 10 songs with leg in the title', 'Top Ten potato based snacks of all time', that sort of caper. I once wrote-off a 1973 Ford Escort, but that doesn't count either I suppose. So writing a book is a huge challenge for me.

I'm now approaching my fiftieth year and I had this idea whilst sitting around a pool in Northern Italy a couple of years ago. i thought it might be fun, and it is. i wanted to write a book that would appeal in the main, to people of my age, but secretly hoped that some folks either side of it might enjoy it, and relate to it too.

I left school at 16 and spent most of my career bored out of my mind in the world of banking. Forced unemployment has allowed me to get a huge chunk of this project down on paper and I thank the credit crunch eternally for that.

In My Life

Tony Shelley

A light-hearted account of growing up in Essex in the 1960s and 1970s, and a lifelong love affair with pop music

In My Life is a light-hearted look back at growing up in the 60s and 70s and what happens when you don't fully achieve that boy-to-older-boy odyssey of stemmed ambition. It’s a confessional yet unrepentant autobiography that runs from childhood memories to mid-life crisis and taps into all of our pasts along the way, with a particular focus on popular culture.

It’s a book for anyone that sniggered at Mrs Slocombe’s pussy, dreamed about scoring the winning goal at Wembley, played in a band or simply stood in front of their bedroom mirror, strapped on an air guitar and sang into a hairbrush. It's about listening to pop music: buying it, loving it, hating it, making up with it and eventually settling down with it.

Written with great humour and a touching frankness, In My Life is a compelling blend of nostalgia and cultural overview, interwoven with a literary soundtrack that saunters through some of the most powerful – and most ghastly – music of recent decades.

Celebrity autobiographies are two-a-penny nowadays, but here is the story of an everyday life to which all readers can relate, but which nevertheless constantly manages to find and revel in the extraordinary within the ordinary.

I think this is fab. Ive read Driving and 33rpm so far. I gathered from 'Driving' that you are a year older than me and the talesof someone (true or otherwise) growing up in the 60s,70s and 80s has great appeal to me. Im kind of thinking that alot of this could easily be an American version of my o... view book

Very much like what I have read so far. Your text is tight and you dont waste very many words. There is a nice pace to this that keeps the text flowing. I had only planned a few minutes here but stayed and read the lot. Im not into picking up gramatical errors. If you manage to get this published t... view book

Enjoyed the first two chaptyers very much. I think Im probably outyside of the demographic for this book but Im certain that middle teens will buy into this with gusto. The lead character Tisha is likeable and as a reader you are on her side from the outset. The plot drew me in straight away and ... view book
