about me

Brought up on a farm in the Sussex Downs in the early 70s, with freedom from the interference of adults. Marked by old stories of my family and a world that had disappeared: My Mother and her family who had colonised Algeria and my Father's family from Ireland. Tales peppered with colonial exploits, fortunes lost and made, chateaux and mansions, wars and bravery.

And somehow out of that I ended up trying to save the planet - graduating as an engineer and then researching in solar energy in Wales. It didn't quite pan out as planned and disillusioned, I ended scrapping most of the books, journals and papers on the local amenity tip (recycled, of course). I became a teacher in the end, but still live through expression, whether on my own stage (in the classroom), or through writing, photography or classical ballet.

I have a huge backlog of books in my head and at last they are coming out. I finished writing my first one in December and ready to pop another out, as soon as the the synapsis in my brain have pieced it into the right adventure.

favourite books

Mr Worry, Roger Hargreaves
The Flame Trees of Thika, Elspeth Huxley
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

The Moon is made of cheese

Henry Uniacke

Surreal adventure of a physics Master in the highly charged environment of a girls’ boarding school. A question of authority and subordination, luck and probability.

In 2005, with mounting debts, Jeremy Crofton is forced to put his Irish ancestral home up for sale and accept that he will have to work for a living. In time, he comes to work as a physics Master in a girls' boarding school in the historic town of Oxford.

Dr Crofton warms to the pupils and, entertained by their antics, is lulled into a false sense of security. With the honeymoon over and his wings clipped by the narcissistic headmistress, he begins to discover the fine line between heaven and hell. But he is not alone as the pantomime has only just begun.

I am totally at home with Tadpole and Maudie after only a couple of chapters. I am a child again. The very strong bond and protective feelings one can have feel for a younger sister is beautifully portrayed. So easy to read, totally without pretention. Each paragraph feels like a little breath.
