about me

“There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You can never quite tell where they’ll take you.” Miss Potter.

Although I have spent the majority of my 31 years in the Arabian Desert, I grew up on fantasy adventures, and stories in which fairies and goblins dwell at the bottom of the garden. I am eternally grateful to my parents for introducing me to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in particular. The name Lorien is taken from J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic story and one of its reported meanings is ‘Dream Land’, which is quite apt, seeing as I tend to live with my head in the clouds!

I set out as an independent copywriter several years ago, and write brochures, web copy, commercial film scripts, press material and just about anything and everything I can get my hands on. My hobbies include working on my children’s stories, which are inspired by the antics and adventures of my siblings when they were much younger, a coffee table book based on local Arab culture, and the first in a series of fantasy novels aimed at young adults.

If you'd like me to read your work, please just ask, and I'll do my best to give constructive, honest feedback. I would very much appreciate the same, regarding my book, in return. (As soon as I upload it that is. Which might help.) Thanks so much.

Now, I have a bone to pick with you, Patrick...I had planned to read a couple of chapters and then get on with some work. Before I knew it, I’d lost an hour or so, along with my will to get down to any serious work! I was just having too much fun! It’s a great read. Light, and laughter-inducing, ... view book

Enviably slick and polished! From a technical point of view, it’s a joy to read, and my eyes just flew across the pages. The amount of detail involved in establishing the characters, scene and plot is humbling. I would love a hardcopy of this – so I could really sit back and get stuck into it wi... view book

One of the most beautiful and memorable first lines of a book I have ever come across. The premise and opening segments of the book are utterly enthralling, enough to make the reader’s pulse quicken with every paragraph. The characters take on shape, form and substance straight away, and are instant... view book

I’ve only read the first few sections, but it’s wonderful stuff, John! Within the first few lines of reading, I was whisked off my chair and into this incredibly tangible world of yours - thank you! The dialogue is confident and your characters are well-defined. I very much admire Jonathan Strou... view book
