about me

Spent too long writing short stories (moderate success - some stories published, won a few competitions, eg Neil Gunn, Winchester, Chrysalis, long-listed for others: Fish - three times, Matthew Pritchard.)

The Turn of the Tide (formerly Munro's Choice) is my first novel - the story of a moral man in an age of violence who strives to maintain his integrity despite involvement in the Ayrshire Vendetta - the most notorious and long running feud in the history of Ayrshire. Taking a stand against William Cunningham - the arrogant and vicious heir to the Cunningham earldom, will threaten his home, his family, even his life...

It is the first book of a series charting the fortunes of the Munro family through the turbulent years of late16th century Scotland and into the 17th century, as they follow Hugh Montgomerie (later to become Viscount Ards) to Ulster to be part of the Plantation of Down.

Nov 2011 update : The (revised) Turn of the Tide has just won the Historical Fiction section of the Harper Collins People's Novelist Competition.
Early chapters are uploaded as a taster here.
I am actively seeking representation./ publication - Any agent /publisher wishing to contact me may e-mail me at margaretskea@hotmail.co. uk or phone - 01573 224849

I am now researching / plotting Book 2.

Although not pro-active on Authonomy at the moment, if anyone reads / comments on Munro I do promise to return the read, unless it is a genre / topic that I feel totally unqualified to judge (and if so I'll tell you.) I don't promise reciprocal backings.
Margaret

favourite books

The Bible, The Battle for the Villa Fiorita by Rumer Godden, anything by D du Maurier, Winston Graham, 'Sharpe' novels, Hammond Innes, John Wyndham, John Christopher... I could go on and on... Plus of course classics like Austen. Love atmospheric writing, description, (but find swearing / explicit sex very off-putting.)

The Turn of the Tide

Margaret Skea

Scotland 1586.
A land in turmoil... old rivalries, a new religion, a young king.
An ancient feud threatens Munro’s family, his home, even his life…

Munro (fictional) is caught up in the real-life drama of the Ayrshire Vendetta A man of integrity, yet divided in loyalty and conscience, he takes part in the ambush and slaughter of a group of Montgomeries. He escapes the bloody aftermath, but the cost is high - estrangement from the wife he sought to protect and internal conflict as he seeks to reconcile centuries old obligations, family and a growing friendship with the opposing faction. Taking a stand against William, the arrogant and vicious Cunninghame heir, will risk his home, his family, even his life...
.

Complete at 102,000 words, The Turn of the Tide (formerly Munro's Choice) is the first book in a series that follows the fortunes of the Munro family through the last years of the 16th century and on into the 17th century and the Plantation of Co. Down in Ulster.
The opening chapters of the revision (post HC review) are uploaded here.
Comments still welcome. I will return read / comment - I seek to be honest and constructive in criticsm, but I don't guarantee to back.

Hi, I owe you a read from a long way back - apologies, haven't been on here much lately. But some thoughts, which I hope will be helpful. Some excellent passages, powerful probably because they were understated - eg - the passage ‘When she wakes....Sloane thinks about answering’ / ‘She makes u... view book

Hi, Congratulations on your agent representation - hope that goes well for you. Crime isn't my normal fare of choice, but I did enjoy the read here, especially the descriptive pieces - sentences such as 'Beyond the church spire, mountains gather in dusty, black-brown folds.' / 'soft, dust-scuffle o... view book

Hi Gabriel, Some feedback - not sure if I owed you a read or not, but anyway... Interesting setting for this coming of age / YA romance.
