about me

After Grammar School, where my main interest was rugby, I spent a gap-time at sea as a Cadet Navigating Officer in the British Merchant Navy before going on to university to train for my career as a Civil Engineer, eventually becoming a Director in the Public Service.

In 1999 my principal occupation changed and I became a professional artist, in which I have had modest success with some work shown in Mayfair galleries. Over the last eight years I have also preyed on unsuspecting audiences as a crooner, singing 1930's Sinatra classics in cabaret and at dinner dances etc.

This year (2010) I published my first novel 'The Hitler Canvas.' Not surprisingly the main character is an artist, a singer and a former seafarer. I also paint my own book cover illustrations. There is now another novel going through the foetid process of gestation on my computer.

My wife and I live in an English village and we became an item in 1968. We have two children and, so far, two grandchildren. I hope you enjoy having a look at my books. The background to my book 'The Hitler Canvas' is on my web-site below, together with some of my paintings and sound-bites from my cabaret act.

favourite books

I mainly like books with vitality, a purposeful plot and a positive feel - principally well crafted action and adventure, by authors such as Frederick Forsyth, Conn Iggulden, Patrick O'Brian, C. S. Forester, Bernard Cornwell.

For sheer style, I particularly enjoy James Lee Burke - reading his work creates an almost audible musical cadence in my mind's ear.

The Hitler Canvas

Ian Conway

Fast-paced story of espionage, war, romance and the supernatural. A cabaret singer and portrait painter is recruited by the British Secret Service in 1936…

Soho night clubs, Mayfair art galleries, love in an artist's studio and tenderness breathed gently over a dining table in the Café Royal. Performing in cabaret on luxury transatlantic liners to spy on German passengers. Romance on the Cote D'Azur. Underground Paris during the Occupation. Painting portraits for the Nazis. Hitler's lair in the Obersalzberg mountains. A painting created with dark, supernatural elements, which must be destroyed. The fall of Berlin and the start of the Cold War. The strange death of a former SS officer in 1983 and a climactic supernatural event in the Old Bailey. Published in August 2010 by Peckforton Press and available through Amazon etc.

HIGH WATER SPRINGS

Ian Conway

Action and adventure in the building of a yachting marina on the North Wales coast. Sailing races, intrigue, the supernatural, sea rescue, love and friendship.

Set in a beautiful bay on the coast of North Wales this is a story about how a few key characters combine their different and considerable skills and talents to lead a small, struggling community with the aim of bringing prosperity to the area through the building of a yachting marina.

Furious dinghy racing in rough water, political intrigue and opposition from vested interests, rescue at sea with the apparent help of a crew who died long ago, the fight with wind, water and rock to tame a wild shore into a safe haven for yachts - all underlain by a tender love affair and the warmth of firm friendships forged by decent people working together to make a worthwhile project happen.

Rob, Spot on ! - and the school is just opposite, as is the harbour. Thanks for not giving the location away. I can't remember the Ship Inn's brewery but I could certainly visualise Fuller in that pub. By the way, Fuller existed - a contemporary at university, now sadly dead. His ship the 'Druid' ... view book
