about me

Right. Signed up close to a year ago, disappeared for a long while, started a new book in the process, got involved with a bunch of other things, and now I'm hoping to find time to keep up with the site for the next few weeks at least.

Behind Slow Cars is a dead project for now; check out Letters to Cars instead, and please comment away!

Letters to Cars

Fares Bounassif

Listen to his story:
Once upon a concert, he met the love of his life. Then, Beirut killed him!

Five years after the concert he met her at, he's in Montréal, thinking out loud, trying to figure out what went wrong.

In his reminiscence, he gives us a tour of Lebanese society, of the corruption of youth, of cosmopolitanism and the consequences of being a third culture kid, and of the pressures of the Lebanese family. He shows us the relational indiscretions of post-war society and compares coupling today with the interactions before the disintegration of the unified Beirut.
In trying to understand why he lost the greatest woman he ever met, he finds answers through relationships, events, and family in Lebanon.

*** The book is complete but going through a re-edit. Parts in the text that are enclosed in <> tags are personal notes. ***

I LOVED it! It needs a bit of polish and refinement, but every time I find something I would change, I find an equal number of reasons not to: - Too much sex in the early chapters, but then again they're great at setting the mood. They might not help garner a greater audience, but then again the... view book

Still reading, but gotta run. Loved the first chapter, and what I've read of the second, but I'll finish it later. Till then, backed! view book

Paxie, thank you for your comment and backing the book! Granted, there are bits that can be cleaned up and some frills should be removed (the draft I'm currently working on is already making those changes), but I was thinking of keeping the (always) and (he's been told)s of the first chapter.... view book

First, I'd like to thank you all for the support! BJ, I've heard plenty of criticisms against writing in the first person, and I've tried to find a million ways to avoid the 'I' in my writing but, unfortunately (maybe), it simply seems natural for my content and my approach to be very first perso... view book

I had every intention to only read the first few chapters and then get on with my work, but I couldn't stop till the end of the 18th chapter! I actually don't even want to stop right now, and for me to want to read a book from start to finish is something that hasn't happened in four years, except f... view book
