Where the Halling Valley River....

Carl Halling

A massive five-book book containing essays, memoirs, versified pieces and far more besides.

"Where the Halling Valley River Lies" is an epic tome containing much of what I've written since I started writing seriously in 2006, or rather, what I consider to be the best of my writing. It exists as a single book, but is in effect five books in one.

Tales of Friendship, Folly and....

Carl Halling

Seven short stories possibly in the creative non-fiction genre.

This is an expansion on a short story collection previously published here, "Three Contemporary Morality Tales", recently removed. One story has been dropped, while the remaining two have been slightly reworked, and seven new stories added. It could be said to be in the creative non-fiction genre, not that I'm 100% certain of the meaning of this concept. The tales themselves are often funny, at least I hope they are, occasionally serious, and hopefully informative and entertaining for everyone. All comments, including advice as to how to improve them, if indeed this is at all possible, would be most welcome. Each tale is pretty short, so the whole book won't take long to read. My main hope is that they are enjoyed, for after all, a writer is as much an entertainer as anything else, isn't s/he? I think so.

Rescue of a Rock and Roll Chil....

Carl Halling

An experiment in spiritual memoir composition in the form of a novella (roman a clef version).

A young British man comes to redemption aged 37 following a turbulent childhood and youth in the Rock and Roll age, and then battles to find a way for himself in a new world.

The Coming of the Absaloms

Carl Halling

Essays to provoke thought and debate.

Controversial essays on culture, art, lterature, music, history, the avant garde, modernism and much more besides.

The Tormenting of David Cristi....

Carl Halling

A memoir, a fictionalised memoir, a roman à cléf, a piece of creative non-fiction, all of these, none of these...anybody have any ideas?

There are so many variants of this tale available at the present time that I confess I'm confused, and if I'm confused, I can only imagine what others must feel. What is featured here is what I pretentiously like to see as a fictionalised memoir, or even more so, a work of creative non-fiction or roman a clef, which it almost certainly isn't. But then what it actually is I haven't the first or faintest idea and am open to all suggestions and help as to how I might improve its prospects if indeed it has any. What is certain is that the main character of David Cristiansen is in fact, the pseudonymous me. Moreover, most of the other personal names, and the vast majority of names of institutions, have also been changed, while the dialogue is of course approximate. It centres on the life of the hero, David Cristiansen, as he wades his way through a turbulent youth and young manhood, and as might be expected, it's a heavily sanitised account, but it does have a happy ending. Which is something.

Relics, Shipwrecks and Castawa....

Carl Halling

Works in progress, odd and oddments, essays, versified pieces concerning sundry subjects including history, biography, music, culture, literature; and more besides.

In effect, this book is a vast miscellany which ties up the loose ends of my writings, so that everything now included at Authonomy consists of writings I'm sufficiently comfortable with in terms of quality. If you venture herein, hopefully you'll discover some new things via works in progress, odd and oddments, essays, on sundry subjects including history, biography, music, culture, literature; also some versified pieces. It's quite a salmagundi actually!

I've read the first two chapters, Naomi, and fully intend to read more. Very skillfully written! I admire your powers of imagination enormously! view book

Others have said similar; but the style is unique and intriguing, and the language and imagery often strikingly aesthetic. And yes, it's consciously artistic. It won't appeal to everyone, because of these very qualities, it requires concentration. Also, some of the strong language will alienate cert... view book

Wow! So far I've enjoyed this immensely. I've been told on some occasions that true-life stories/memoirs will only be enjoyed if they are by famous people, but that is absolutely not so. Many people love to read about other people, famous or not, and this is a very moving, intense, and yet also rema... view book

Very interesting work, Michael, as a Christian who has suffered substance abuse problems and attendant issues myself I find myself agreeing with much of what you write. Compassion is part of the development of holiness, and many Christians have a lot of work to do in this area, not least myself. Per... view book

I just read the first three chapters, and it's a rattling good start; the story really draws you in, and you want to discover how the hero gets on out of his comfort zone from the get-go. The style is very pacy and engaging, full of rich description and gentle humour. I am looking forward to reading... view book
