Muireann and Lord Donale heir to Rhonan’s vast estates are lovers. As Muireann is the penniless ward of the Earl of Rhonan, to reveal their love would be to incur his wrath and the scorn of society. As the famine known as the Great Hunger rages, Donale’s father The Earl of Rhonan refuses to give food or aid to his peasants. Muireann and Donale know they have no choice but to remain and fight for the lives of the victims.
In the present, a young American, Dr. Jessica Mirren, owner of a chain of hotels stretching across America, visits Rhonan Manor Hotel, and meets the present Earl of Rhonan, the brooding Lord Daragh. She recognizes him as the man in her recurring dreams.
