about me

Two characters in 'Cain Bone Whittled' have a conversation that goes like this.

'Beauty where you find it.'
'That's right. Life where you find it Frank. That's the only way it's ok. That's the only way a searching life is justified.'
'If you're true to what you find?'
'If you're true to what you find Frank.'

So that's where I am. That's where I've come to. It's taken me years to get here but it's been worth the journey. I think that life is too short not to be true to yourself, and I'm trying with my life to get to the core, the marrow. It's like Thoreau said,

'It is life near the bone where it is sweetest.'

If you would like to make friends than I would too.

favourite books

My favorite published authors are Cormac McCarthy, Charles Bukowski, and John Steinbeck. Maybe also William Faulkner.

This is a book about a drifter and a kid in a small town in South Africa where no black people are allowed.

For Rebecca, my God every last word.

Frank is a drifter, cut loose, walking on a highway, his back to the sun, searching for something new.

Vernon is a 12 year old kid living with his mother in the small town of Orania, hoping for his father's return. He is concerned with growing up, becoming a man, and coming to an understanding with God about his place in the world.

This story takes place when Frank, passing through Orania, realises he knew Vernon's father in the war, and might have more to offer the boy than he thought.

This is beautiful writing Karen. As I lay dying, and The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner come to mind for comparisons, or the Orchard Keeper by Cormac McCarthy. That was his first novel so if this is yours you are in good company. I’ll point out a few lines that stand out as I read as I really app... view book
