about me

Enjoy writing, but not enough time. One finished first draft of what I guess would be called a crime caper, set in Glasgow, and which is featured here.

Prologue now long gone - RIP!

Chapter 1 much revised from original, and Chapter 2 had a major re-write a short while back (but not got around to reporting on it here!).

I stll write an occasional blog on my fantasy to move to France where I can eat Olives, drink pastis, and write crime novels - some of these are published by The Arran Voice newspaper - which went bust a while back.

favourite books

I'm a pretty undemanding sort of reader; if I like it I'll read it. That said I tend towards crime fiction so Ian Rankin an obvious favourite, but those in the know also rate Allan Guthrie as someone to watch out for I think, as well as Denise Mina and my pal Sue Walker. Pelicanos and Mosely my top US writers as well.

Enjoy what I call crime capers so used to enjoy Brookmyre but think he's gone off the boil and become a bit self indulgent, so enjoy good consistent comedy crime writers like Hiassen and Bateman.

The Unfaithful Seven

Alasdair Smith

Louis, one of Glasgow’s leading underworld characters, has lined his pockets redeveloping the city's derelict areas through bribes to the city's head of planning.

Delivered at a series of secretly fixed poker matches, the latest and biggest match to date, saw Louis push half a million pounds to planning supremo Steve McDonald to help a massive riverside regeneration project get through the necessary red tape.

When Louis discovers that the project won its planning permit on merit alone he embarks on a mission to get his money back and sets all of the other players that took part in that final, half-million pound poker game to find the cash and return it to him.

The six hapless gamblers are eventually joined by Louis’ trusted henchman Malkie as they work their way around various pubs and clubs, getting increasingly inebriated to track down the missing money.

I'm not a proof reader and so judge books on the impact they make on me as a reader. I try to comment generally on stuff I like and I liked this. Obvioulsy the Scottish connection helps, but stylistically this is in Brookmyre (when he was any good) territory, or for a more contemporary comparison Do... view book

After a read through the first chapter this seemed more of a crime/thriller novel (I love a good corpse early on in any story) but stylistically very much more light-hearted. The set up is nicely constructed - what does that key mean? Why a bible? where will it lead - a good device to get the reader... view book

There's a lovely touch to your writing. Incredibly easy to get drawn in to your story. Also I really liked your visualisation of Telegraoph Road - could almostfeel myself there. Best of luck. view book
