about me

Reference Librarian

My short story, "Stick and Strings" was published in Mid-American Review and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. I was accepted into Indiana University's MFA program, where I won the Ellis Literary Award for my short story, "The Tannery."
I had stopped writing fiction when I became a librarian, but returned a few years ago with "Puzzle Trees." An earlier draft, "The Green Apettes," was one of three finalists in 2010 Leapfrog Press YA fiction. That version contained fantasy elements that I have since removed on the recommendations of the excellent judges.

Geoff, The attention to detail that some of your readers placed into their comments really puts me to shame, and I apologize for not having specific criticism. Well, I do have one very minor thing; I usually cringe when a character in a book is compared to a movie actor (Heath Ledger, in this case)... view book

Wow, Brian, you got a potential summer best-seller here, not to mention a movie deal! I like how you are maintaining the two main threads of the story -- the police procedural of the "supposed" human serial killer and the scientific mystery of the animal tumors -- and it is just a matter of time be... view book

Gordon -- typo in Chapter 3: first of my school friends to "asked" me I found this when I re-read these opening chapters, mainly to confirm my earlier remarks. Your prose is impeccable. You have certainly earned your spot in the top 5! I hope I wasn't too harsh on your opening chapter. I mean, it'... view book

Gordon, I'll be honest. I had some problems with the first chapter. Though you hooked me with that opening scene, I had trouble getting my head around the various characters, especially, ironically, Marfisa, who doesn't seem to quite gel as a person. As for the others in that opening discussion, pe... view book

I just finished reading my first complete Authonomy novel, and yours was it! Good choice, if I do say so myself. ;-) The story did not unfold as I expected from the opening chapters. It begins more as a kind of scavenger hunt than as the espionage thriller it eventually becomes. I thought that Mi... view book
