about me

I came upon this story by accident in 2006. I was surfing the internet and came upon this statement that Wisconsin executed its only man as a state back in 1851. I continued reading and it stated that the state wants to bring back the death penalty. What's this all about? I thought.

I found that there was a murder in the eastern part of Wisconsin back in October 2005. It disturbed many state legislators. Thus, they created a resolution to place an advisory referendum on the ballot in November 2006 asking the voters whether the death penalty should be reinstated for 1st degree intentional homicide if supported by DNA evidence. It passed.

The next day, after the voters found out that the referendum passed, they also discovered the governor was going to veto any bill coming to him with the death penalty attached.

I had no trouble with the governor's position. I did have a problem with the state legislators putting forth this referendum knowing full well how the governor felt about this issue.

In doing research for my novel, I discovered that at no time were the people allowed to participate throughout Wisconsin history when the death penalty came up. Only the legislators dealt with this problem.

I also made another discovery which is very interesting and which is the premise for my novel. A certain state legislator opposed the death penalty but did say that THE PEOPLE SHOULD DECIDE.

Everything I stated is true but the novel is fiction with these true facts blended in. It's a story that needs to be told.

REFERENDUM FOR MURDER

Mickey Polansky

The time period is 2006-2008.

In Wisconsin, the argument is stringent: should the death penalty be reinstated or is it considered cruel and unusual punishment. It's an issue that incites anger, whether citizens are for or against capital punishment.

Thomas McCormick is a member of the Wisconsin State Legislature. He has seen firsthand the pros and cons of the death penalty, so does he want it reinstated?

Following a bank robbery and the murder of a police officer, capital punishment advocates go wild. The criminal killed a cop; doesn't the criminal deserve to die. McCormick finds himself involved with the protesters, especially when he meets beautiful Barbara Hernandez, the cop's widow. He realizes she's a tenacious crusader out for justice. She want's the death penalty reinstated in Wisconsin.

With Barb's help, Tom gets a referendum put before the voters that would reinstate the death penalty. A certain political activist will attempt to prevent their success through strong arm tactics and even murder. Tom has growing feelings for Barb, but wonders if this is the right time to fall in love. As they fight for what they believe is right, they must also fight for each other.

Ok, here's what I got out of shining Dawn that will help you. Skip the prologue. It's unnecessary. I, at one time, also had a prologue. After attending three writer's conferences; two in NYC and one in Madison, Wisconsin all agents on hand mentioned prologues are a drag and not necessary. Instead, h... view book

Read chapter one. Fast moving chapter because of the dialogue used. Sometimes that first chapter drags because too much story and very little dialogue used. Generally this type of writing is called back story. Nothing wrong with back story but the chapter one should begin with a fury. Through this y... view book
