about me

Greetings fellow raconteurs,

The name is J. C. VanHorn, but feel free to call me The Pants if it tickles your fancy. I have uploaded my premier novel on this convenient website know as Authonomy (from HarperCollins!) and am hoping to get some honest opinions of it that can help with the story's final draft. If you happen to peruse my effort, don't hesitate to proclaim the degree at which you feel it blows. You could even complement my work if you so desire. The latter is definitely preferable.

My writing is...honest. I do not veer from violence or expletives, and likewise am offended when a writer chooses to navigate around such elements when a scene or character calls for something a bit more "obscene." That said, I'm also unhappy with language and scenes that seem implemented simply for shock value over its importance to the story.

Well...you know a little about me now. You've reviewed (or will soon) my list of favorite books. If you've a story of your own on this site you think I may take interest in, suggest it to me and I'll read and comment on it when I can.

Your buddy-guy,
The Pants

P.S. I'm a Metalhead and a Gamer. If you receive the urge to send me a random message exclaiming that Opeth is the most talented band in the multiverse, I will reply with "Yes! And I also love Skeletonwitch and Kvelertak!"

If you want to message me saying that Demon's Souls should have been 2009 Game of the Year, do this, and it will make me splendidly (gah!--an awfully [another!] used adverb!) joyous.

If you didn't understand a bit of that postscript, ignore it. It wasn't meant for you.

I read chapter 5 as you asked, and I must say: this is some dark shit, Carl. Your writing provides great imagery. Particularly Jose at the end. I have a strong mental picture of the man standing amidst a room splashed in red, meat hooks swinging behind him. It's ghastly good. I also find it v... view book

Hey there Rusty, I sent you some spam to check out my novel, and in return you sent me a link to yours. When I saw it was chick lit, I figured "Hell, I've been listening to enough Fiona Apple lately that surely I've enough cred to pass on my opinions on a book mainly for females." Not to mention ... view book

Laura, The first chapter of In Her Blood provides a simple-to-follow story with a deep amount of mystery that encourages readers to discover what happens further along in the tale. After reading all seven chapters, I must say Western Tides is definitely a story I could get lost in the entirety of. In fact, being cut off from the story a third of the way through calls up memories of when I was little and Back to the Future 2 ended on a cliffhanger. My young mind screamed "Noooo... view book

Hey EMD, If you'd have told me there was a story out there about a trucker I'd enjoy, I'd have said you were a damn loon. This, however, I like. I love the idea of the story, especially in the literary form, because let's be honest: if this were a movie made in today's world it would be dumbed do... view book
