about me

Hi everyone,

I've bowed out of the rankings race for the time being to concentrate on writing and supporting my family! I will not be actively reviewing books for the next few months.

The feedback and encouragement I've had from being on the site has been amazing, and a huge thank you to everyone who has supported Ambassador 12. I've left it posted as I know a couple of people are still reading it - I plan to give it a full re-edit in 2-3 months time.

If anyone would like to contact me, my direct email is philip@philipchurchman.com. Best of luck with all of your books. There's some great non-formulaic storytelling here that really should reach a wider audience.

Best Wishes, Philip

My Bio:

I’m a freelance consultant, university lecturer, photographer and aspiring writer. I live in Norwich, England with my wonderful wife and three children.

I was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1968. When I was seven, my family moved to Abu Dhabi. It was a colourful and exciting time; my best friends were an Indian and an Armenian, I learned to water-ski, and was often sent to the market by my parents to haggle. The entertainment that the skinny English boy gave the traders frequently resulted in me getting better prices than my parents could!

When I was thirteen I returned to the UK and went to a grammar school in Tunbridge Wells and then to Oxford University. It was there that I met my wife-to-be and other people who would become my lifelong friends.

I began my working life as an engineer and before long was travelling to places like Egypt, Sweden and South Africa to design bookbinding and magazine production lines. I loved the travel, people, and daily need to find creative solutions to the many practical problems the job presented.

In 1993, looking for new challenges, I became a management consultant and spent the following twelve years continuing to travel and meeting a wide variety of fascinating and talented people.

In 2005 I joined a large insurance company and spent three years as Strategy and Planning Director. I became a victim of the economic downturn in 2009 when I was made redundant. This gave me the opportunity to do a number of things I had always wanted to do including writing a book. I wrote my first book, Ambassador 12, in spring 2009.

Ambassador 12

Philip Churchman

Isaac is not a normal thirteen-year-old boy. He is on the run and, if the Agency doesn’t catch him, he may just save the world.

The story follows Isaac Constance who discovers that he is able to survive situations that no normal person could. A climate of fear and paranoia is developing in the world, a sinister aspect of which is the creation of the Agency, which hunts down unusual teenagers.

When Isaac out-skis an avalanche to rescue a girl he is no longer able to hide his abilities. Over the next six months he is chased by the Agency across Europe until he is saved by a mysterious woman called Cécile. He learns that he and she are "Ambassadors", put on Earth to grow up among humans and save humanity from self-destruction.

In order to rescue Katarina, the youngest of the Ambassadors, Isaac must allow himself to be caught. He is brutally interrogated before finding Katarina and engineering their escape. They are chased across Asia to China where they learn they must travel with four other Ambassadors to the summit of K2. Tragedy and betrayal follow and only some make it to the dramatic climax.

Ambassador 12 is a fast-paced and thought-provoking science fiction thriller aimed at teenagers and young adults - a cross between Close Encounters and Bourne!

Hi Alan, Saw this on Marita Hansen's desk and thought I'd take a look. Read the first couple of chapters - great start and engaging, vividly descriptive style - this is a very good, easy flowing read and strikes me as very commercial. Some hopefully helpful, very nit-picky points. In chapter 2, ... view book

Hi Robert, This is a fascinating plunge into the world of the peace corps, one that I know very little about. John's voice is authentic and the characters he encounters are well and vividly drawn. No typos or grammatical mistakes that I could see - an easy flowing read. I've only read 3 chapters... view book

Hi Polly, sorry it's taken me a few days to get to Stones. I really, really like this. I've read to chapter 4 and it is what YA fiction should be all about, thoughtful, mature and resonant. Coo's voice is calm and true and I find myself experiencing what she is experiencing. There are no gimmicks, j... view book

Hi Anna, This is a very engaging story and I've just read the first three chapters straight through. The sense of impending catastrophe and star crossed lives is already very palpable and I definitely want to read more - I just need to go and give my children their breakfast now! I especially liked... view book
