about me

Note to all who happen by:

I am a mother and grandmother who would love to spend a lot more time here than is possible right now. So far, I like what I've seen of the changes.

However, the baby gives me little time so for now, I will be remembering some of the great books I've read here in the past and offering them some time on my shelf. I will not be leaving many comments, if any, so please consider a backing an indication that there was enough to like about your book that though it might need some work, there was enough there to hold my interest. Also, I will always be open to recommendations.

My writing stems from my experience as a trail guide, 4-H Horse and Pony leader, competitor, and a lifelong admiration for horses, the American West, and the indomitable human spirit. I also write for an online studio and am actively seeking representation for the two novels posted here.

Thanks in advance,
Barb

Whispers through the Aspens

BJ Alexander

A Colorado ghost town was only a tourist attraction until the death of a guest breathed life into a legend. Then a boy disappeared …

A young woman’s fatal fall from a cliff is only the latest in a series of unexplained deaths that have fed the legend of a Colorado ghost mining town for over a hundred years. But this time the victim’s family wants answers Will Adler, the head wrangler at Aspen Valley, can’t give them. And now her sister, Robyn, is there with an agenda of her own.

Only days later, Will’s young son disappears, sending his father on a frantic search up the mountain where he finds unlikely support in Robyn and then a clue that the mountain he’d always loved might hold a sinister secret—far beneath the surface . . .

Silent Hoofbeats (revised)

BJ Alexander

Rodeo made him a star. A crippling accident and the life that followed made him a man.

His career destroyed by a crippling injury, former rodeo champ Joel Garrett unwillingly faces life outside the showring. Riding had once been as easy as breathing but now every step is painful, every breath an effort.

Desperate for a future, he finds himself at a rundown barn in the middle of nowhere. There, he meets an old man equally broken by life, a young man struggling under the shadow of abuse, and a horse that could restore them all.

Together they forge a dream of greatness, but nothing in Joel's previous life has prepared him for the destruction that follows his past finally meeting his present.

The Final Cruise- As promised, I'm back after reading more. Ch2 opened in the past with TJ’s birth and was a bit of a surprise since ch1 had ended without Rosa learning much of anything about TJ. You might consider a better transition—what clue did she finally find? Or what person finally s... view book

The Final Cruise- I liked this. Not sure it's necessary base it on a school assignment--woudn't natural curiosity be enough? Also, I wasn't quite of Rosie's age--at first I thought she was a child! Maybe ch1 was a little drawn out, taking a little too long for her to get any real response t... view book

No Compatibility- By the time I was halfway through ch1, there was smoke coming out of my eyes. And I had no clue what was going on. You have an amazing and admirable command of the language, one that, I'm afraid, I am powerless to critique. Best of luck. -Barb view book

Chasing the Wind- Ah, I remember those days .... Good read. Dialog is well done. You've chosen a very volatile subject but one that could really go places in fiction. Needs good edit for punctuation including the proper use of 'its' and it's' and the elimination of most '-ly' words. Tra... view book

A Matter of Conscience- This book was recommended to me with very good literary taste! You had me at the pitch so reading three chapters was no problem at all. You have crafted a story set in a world few of us know past the ringing of our doorbell and for that reason, I have to admit a certain mo... view book
