about me

I have worked as a professional actor for the last fourteen years. I have worked with theatre companies such as RSC, The Really Useful Company, Manchester Royal Exchange, People Show and Forced entertainment. I have also worked quite a bit in TV and film. I have been very lucky that my work has taken me to South America, Canada, India and Europe. I have directed shows and I also teach,

One thing I have done that is different from being a normal actor is making my own theatre shows and short films. Through working with individual artists and working with other devised companies I would write most of the material. We would get government money for the work, or special commissions from theatre or foundations. I have written over, this is an estimate, thirty pieces of theatre.

Most recently I was commissioned with the People Show and The Liverpool City of culture to write an adaptation of Strindberg’s Ghost Sonata that was performed last year in Liverpool.

My play Nice People also last year won a Bite Size competition, was performed around the country and won the following awards:
Brighton Festival Angel Award 2008 for Artistic Excellence - Public Vote
Edinburgh Fringe First Nomination 2008
Top 5 Shortlist Carol Tambor (New York) "Best of Edinburgh" Award

It is currently being broadcast on SKY ARTS

I have just finished my first novel ‘Melek: and other such stories of Heaven and Hell” and have been testing out chapters on a story telling night called “Are You Sitting Comfortably” in London. Myself and Bernadtte Russell have been running a story telling event for over a year now to promote new writing and it’s been very popular.

Next I would like write the second book in the Melek Series, a play about toilet attendants and a TV series called “Towards the light’ a story about ghosts from the ghosts point of view.

MELEK: Stories of Heaven and H....

Gareth Brierley

A collection of interconnecting stories about MELEK a disgraced Angel, with one burnt stump of a wing and a serious alcohol problem.

I’d like to tell you many things. Stories of Angels and Demons, accounts of a war between heaven and hell, and tales of time travel on the tube. I’d like to tell you the sagas of online virtual genocide, possessions gone wrong, OAP devil worshipers, the reminiscences of a ghost, fairytales, and of small children with horrific powers. I’d like to tell you how it began and I promise I will eventually tell you how it will end. But not yet…. Because there is Melek and all of these stories involve it. A disgraced Angel, with one burnt stump of a wing, a serious alcohol problem, a hundred a day cigarette habit and an eternal love/hate relationship with us. Melek holds the secret to it all, the angel is our hero, villain, and unlikely protector of all humankind. Melek doesn’t know this yet and this angel has one hell of a hangover

Great read. Wasn't what I expected at all and I was really surprised. Brilliantly written and can imagine this as a bestseller easily. Will finish more next week, view book

I don't normally read books in this genre - but I was completely gripped and was very impressed by your description of the action as it unfolded. I think this book will very well indeed and wish you all the luck. You deserve it from what I have read Gareth view book

Epic, Wonderful and Deeply touching. Your prose and style is fantastic to read. It bolts along at a fair lick, but trying to catch up with the hero is very enjoyable. I have been to india for work and you have researched it brilliantly. I have now got to chapter 8 but have loved every moment. Go... view book
