about me

How does one condense a maverick’s life? Let’s start with academics. It started with a degree course they termed B.A. (Management) where Philip Kotler’s marketing principles mixed extremely well with the teachings of other management gurus to build a platform for a young mind to grasp well the nitty-gritty of successfully running a show, whatever the industry. It was in 1991 that they gave the certificate and marching orders to implement what was taught.

Management gurus gave way to Shakespeare and folks of his ilk in M.A. (Eng. Lit.). The two years course gave an indepth view of the wonderful world of literature, sowing definitive creative seeds that will bear fruit in the future.

The seemingly-odd confluence of management and literature led to a short, but successful stint in sales, which finally led to a creative life, beginning with being a Creative Director at a television production house. The work involved ideation to assembling the creative team to make sure the final execution is in tandem with the initial idea formed the responsibility.

Alongside happened magazine editing. As an Editor, be it Chastity (a sex education magazine) or Great Looks (fashion magazine) or for that matter, Raga to Rock (music magazine), the idea was always to push the envelope and enter unchartered waters.

Television still continued, this time along with films. As CEO & Creative Head of a production house, I forayed into small budget films. Of course television was still on: be it as Creative Director or Writer for serials .

Creative pursuits followed. One platform was as a Consulting Editor, where I was instrumental in creating books and magazines for kids. World Almanac for Kids, Young Mind Crossword Series, Sudoku and Kakuro magazines are some of the many projects that kept the creative juices flowing.

Another platform was Macmillan India Ltd. where they titled me as Creative Head-Corporate Publishing, creating customised books for their corporate clients, be it health-educational books for pharmaceutical clients or story books for the largest retain chain network in India.

Next halt was Magna Publishing Co. Ltd. where, as Editorial Head – Book Division, came up with many firsts, notable being Poison in the Tale, a set of short stories with twists in the end (Magna’s foray into fiction), Everything You Wanted To Know About Radio Jockeying…(prescribed by many Mass Communication Colleges like XIC, Mumbai) and Unlock Your ESP Potential (the first book of its kind in India).

Film happened again. This time as Writer. Monopoly: The Game of Money is a Hindi feature film based on hacking, slated for mid 2010 release.

Presently, I play around with world-famous characters like Doraemon, Shinchan, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Hello Kitty, among others, apart from creating in-house characters like Fafa & Juno, creating books and television programs as Editorial Head at Kids Animation India Pvt. Ltd. at Mumbai, India.

This Mr. Been-there-to-do-that-and-more lives in neverland (no, not Jackson’s ranch) and in case someone wants to send bouquets – or, brickbats – there’s a safe way: raajeshiyyer@yahoo.co.in. And, if you feel cuss words are better said than printed, there’s a number the service provider has allocated: 9821075892.

In case you’re dying to know when this great show started, it did one lovely afternoon, way back in 1970. 3rd November. 2:45 P.M. to be precise. Amen to that!

A Dive Down The Abyss

Rajesh Iyer

Hilarious and haunting, this is a coming-of-age, soul seraching journey of Hari that’s recognizable in its happenings and touching in its raw humaneness.

An inconsequent-yet-happy dream was what Hari’s life was. An adoring mother, a strict father and a sister he never saw eye to eye with. Then, of course, there were his friends like the eccentric Babua, crazy Pravin who fed frogs with gudaku and the absent-minded Pawan. But, this idyllic picture was set to change.

Hari’s life actually moved around the elusive Murthy uncle’s sayings. From coaxing people with his “dive into the abyss of nothingness,” which in a way kick-started Hari’s soul-searching journey to his final words to Hari: “The devil is inside us.” The innumerable questions, the wild goose like quest, a newly found rebelliousness and a monumental loss eventually leads Hari’s life to an ironic crescendo and perhaps another journey.

Hilarious, haunting and mesmerizing, this is a coming-of-age story that’s recognizable in its happenings and touching in its raw humaneness.
