about me

Originally from Scotland, I have lived and worked in a variety of countries over the years and have dabbled in writing as a hobby since I was a child. While living in the Isle of Man, I wrote a novel for 12+ taking inspiration from the dramatic scenery and history of the island and linking it to my second homeland - Australia.

The book is complete and all but the last few chapters are uploaded here.

Although I have self-published the book, one big failing is in the marketing/distribution area. I'd really appreciate help with this - particularly getting into schools and libararies where I think there is a potential market for the book as it is linked to the curriculum of both the UK and Australia..

Book Cover by Bradley Wind.

I am currently working on a follow-up novel with the same main character but a few years later. This novel is for adults.

19th Century Isle of Mann, 12-year-old Jamie takes to the sea in his struggle to keep his family together.

In mid-19th Century Peel, the ancient capital of the Isle of Mann, a young boy struggles to keep his family together. As a ship’s cook on a fishing boat, he works untiringly but it isn’t enough to provide a home for his family.

An unexpected opportunity comes his way when he and his best friend are offered the chance to sign up for a new ship bound for Australia. They arrive in Melbourne amidst a frenzied rush of newcomers desperate to get to the goldfields.

Forming a team with some fellow travellers, the small band set off across the harsh, Australian terrain with dreams of becoming rich. Their meagre reserves of money are running out when luck comes their way only to be followed by terrible news from home.

Thoroughly enjoyable read, well crafted and flows on so effortlessly from the old classic. I will back it now and again in the future when it looks like you are getting near the editor's desk. Lorraine Mannin Boy view book

This flows really well. The characters are very convincing. There are a few unecessary bits e.g. you don't have to explain that his sister can't pronounce his name. There are also a few little editing picks which would be easily fixed with a read through by a friend/colleague e.g. 'the only way moth... view book

I'm glad I took time to read The White House. I found it much more arresting than the first story which needs a bit of editing and I felt lacked the tightness of your second story. The dialogue in the second one really helped to develop the story and characters and moved the tale along at a good pac... view book

Your pitch caught me right away - the combination of sailing ships, the era and the Scottish element - I couldn't NOT have a look. I have only read the first chapter but is written confidently. I will read more later. Lorraine Mannin Boy view book

Excellent dialogue and wonderful description. I will read more and will most definitely back you. I tend to back one or two books a month that are close to the editors desk and I back them for the entire month. I intend putting yours on myshelf for the month of April. Let me know if you would prefer... view book
