I like the somber tone. Even before I had a picture of protagonist, I had a definite feeling that his world was a sort of blue-gray affair, dulled by apathy, yet he was still performing a duty require of him. First off, wow on the prologue. I don't generally go for those, but you managed, in one page, underscore exactly why the exodus from France was, shall we say, a priority.
